Big Sky crown up for grabs in clash between Lumberjacks and Vikings

Wed 12th, March 2008

Portland, OR (Sports Network) - The top-seeded Portland State Vikings are set to host the second-seeded Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in the Big Sky Conference Tournament title game, and an NCAA Tournament bid will be awarded to the winner.

Northern Arizona knocked off Weber State in the semifinal round last night by a 75-70 final to earn its third consecutive trip to the Big Sky championship match. The Lumberjacks are the fifth team in the history of the league to advance to three or more consecutive title games. They have tied a single- season record with 21 wins, a feat achieved on four previous occasions in school history. NAU is seeking its first trip to the "Big Dance" since 2000 and its third Big Sky title overall.

As for Portland State, it has never won this tournament and is making its first-ever appearance in the championship game. The Vikings earned a spot in tonight's showdown with a 72-61 victory over Idaho State last night in the semifinals. They have now won a school-record 22 games this season, including 13 straight against conference foes.

Portland State won both meetings against Northern Arizona during the regular season, and the Vikings own a 14-11 advantage in the all-time series.

Northern Arizona connected on 56 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half against Weber State last night and shot an even better 61.1 percent over the final 20 minutes. Perhaps most impressive of all is that the squad knocked down 11-of-15 three-pointers in the contest. Kyle Landry was the only player for the Lumberjacks to reach double figures in scoring, as he finished with 21 points. Still, Nick Larson and Nate Geiser added nine points apiece, and several other individuals chipped in positive contributions. Overall this season, Landry is scoring 17.8 ppg on 59.6 percent shooting from the field to go along with 8.0 rpg. Josh Wilson adds 11.7 ppg and 168 assists for the Lumberjacks, who are posting 73.6 ppg while allowing 68.6 ppg.

Deonte Huff scored 20 points to lead Portland State to the victory over Idaho State last night. Jeremiah Dominguez pitched in 16 points, and Andre Murray added 11 points. The Vikings only connected on 37 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half, but they did manage to shoot 58.3 percent over the final 20 minutes. They also forced 15 turnovers in the clash, another key to the win. Dominguez continues to lead the team in scoring with 14.4 ppg, and he is dishing out 4.0 apg as well. As for Huff, he is close behind with 13.8 ppg to go along with 6.1 rpg. Center Scott Morrison can usually be counted on for a solid performance, but he managed only one point against Idaho State. Morrison averages 11.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg.
