Saint Joseph's extends Martelli's contract

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Saint Joseph's University extended the contract of men's basketball coach Phil Martelli on Thursday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the new contract will keep Martelli on Hawk Hill through the 2015-16 season.

"My family and I are deeply appreciative of the unique opportunity that has been given to me at Saint Joseph's," Martelli said. "It is an honor to represent all whom have worn Saint Joseph's across their chest."

Martelli, who will be entering his 14th season as head coach, guided the Hawks to a 21-13 record in 2007-2008 and their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in his tenure with the school.

"Phil Martelli and Saint Joseph's University have always been a perfect match," said university president Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. "Under his leadership, the program has attained a prominent place on the national stage and is well-positioned to remain there for years to come. I am proud to know him as an extraordinary individual who is also an exceptional leader of our men's basketball program."

In 13 seasons at Saint Joe's, Martelli owns a record of 261-152, good for second all-time in victories at the school. He has coached the Hawks to nine postseason appearances, including an NCAA Tournament Elite Eight run in 2003-2004, as the Hawks went a school-best 30-2 and earned a No. 1 seed in the tournament. Martelli also guided the Hawks to six Atlantic-10 regular-season titles, including five consecutive crowns from 2000-2005. His squads have posted a 132-76 record in conference play.

Martelli's 17 postseason wins are the most in school history. He had previously signed an extension through 2011-2012 after the 2003-2004 season.
