Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic underwent successful surgery on Wednesday for a herniated disc, and the veteran center is expected to be out approximately 10 weeks.
Sakic, 39, hasn't played since a November 28 game at Phoenix and was originally expected to be sidelined six weeks before injuring himself again early last month in a snow blower accident. The Burnaby, British Columbia native underwent surgery to repair three broken fingers and tendon damage and the timetable for a return was three months, but that has since been pushed back.
Sakic has only played in 15 games this season, notching two goals and 10 assists. He was limited to just 44 games last year due to a groin injury and sports hernia surgery.
Originally taken 15th overall by Quebec in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, Sakic has played his entire career with the Nordiques/Avalanche franchise, guiding Colorado to pair of Stanley Cup titles in 1996 and 2001.
The former league MVP and Conn Smythe trophy winner has registered 625 goals and 1,016 assists in 1,378 career regular-season games.
