Cilic, Karlovic advance; Moya tumbles out of Chennai

Thu 8th, January 2009

Chennai, India (Sports Network) - Tall seeded Croats Marin Cilic and Ivo Karlovic were among Thursday's second-round winners, while former world No. 1 Carlos Moya came up a loser at the $450,000 Chennai Open, an ATP World Tour season-opening event and Australian Open tune-up.

The third-seeded 6-foot-5 Cilic handled Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 6-0, 6-4, while the fourth-seeded 6-foot-10 Karlovic dismissed Czech Ivo Minar 6-1, 6-4 on the hardcourts at SDAT Stadium.

The sixth-seeded Spanish Moya, however, was an upset victim at the hands of Indian wild card Somdev Devvarman, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. The 1997 Aussie Open runner- up Moya captured this event back-to-back in 2004 and 2005.

Three other seeds avoided upsets, as No. 5 Rainer Schuettler shut down fellow German Simon Greul 6-4, 6-2, No. 7 Serb Janko Tipsarevic got past Israeli Dudi Sela 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and No. 8 Spaniard Marcel Granollers grounded German Andreas Beck 6-4, 6-1.

One other second-round result saw German Bjorn Phau paste Italian qualifier Flavio Cipolla 6-1, 6-2.

Friday's quarterfinal matches will pit Cilic against Tipsarevic, Karlovic versus the heavy crowd favorite Devvarman, Schuettler against Phau and Granollers versus Czech lucky-loser Lukas Dlouhy.

The '09 Aussie Open will commence January 19 in Melbourne.
