Brisbane, Australia (Sports Network) - Third-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco and unseeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu notched quarterfinal victories Thursday at the ATP World Tour's season-opening Brisbane International tennis event.
Verdasco topped 2006 tournament champion Florent Serra 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. The French Serra won this event back in 2006, when it was held in Adelaide.
The 25-year-old Verdasco clinched last year's Davis Cup championship for Spain by prevailing in a singles rubber against host Argentina.
Verdasco's semifinal opponent on Saturday will be Mathieu, who drilled Japanese youngster Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-4 on the hardcourts at this Australian Open tune-up.
The other semifinal will be determined here on Friday, when second-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes on his seventh-seeded countryman Richard Gasquet and fourth-seeded Swede Robin Soderling faces eighth-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek. Tsonga was last year's runner-up to Serbian star Novak Djokovic at the Aussie Open.
The winner of this $484,750 tournament will collect $77,200.
