Sydney, Australia (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia advanced, while No. 2 seed Gilles Simon, of France, fell in second-round action at the Medibank International, a final Australian Open tune-up.
The reigning Aussie Open titlist Djokovic made short work of Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, 6-1, 6-2. Simon, however, fell 6-4, 6-4 to compatriot Richard Gasquet, who has won seven straight matches against his fellow Frenchmen.
Third-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, last year's Aussie Open runner-up, handled Italy's Simone Bolelli 6-4, 6-1 and advanced to face Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in the quarterfinals. Nieminen defeated Aussie wild card Chris Guccione 7-6 (10-8), 6-3. Guccione was last year's Sydney runner-up to Russian Dmitry Tursunov.
Fourth-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian easily dismissed France's Michael Llodra 6-1, 6-3, while another Frenchman, qualifier Jeremy Chardy, overcame No. 5 seed Igor Andreev, of Russia, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The seventh seed, Spain's Tommy Robredo, fell 6-2, 6-1 to Croatia's Mario Ancic, while wild card Lleyton Hewitt of Australia edged Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic 7-5, 6-4.
Djokovic will face Ancic in the quarterfinals, while Chardy will play Gasquet. The former world No. 1 Hewitt, a four-time winner of this Sydney event, will face Nalbandian on Thursday.
The 2009 Sydney titlist will take home $78,500.
