Djokovic advances, Simon falls in Sydney

Sydney, Australia (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia advanced but No. 2 seed Gilles Simon, of France, fell in second-round action at the Medibank International.

Djokovic made short work of Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-1, 6-2. Simon, though, fell 6-4, 6-4 to Richard Gasquet, also of France.

Third-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga handled Italy's Simone Bolelli 6-4, 6-1 and will advance to face Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in the quarterfinals. Nieminen defeated Aussie Chris Guccione 7-6 (10-8), 6-3.

Argentinian fourth-seed David Nalbandian easily dismissed France's Michael Llodra 6-1, 6-3. Another Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy, overcame No. 5 seed Igor Andreev, of Russia, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to advance.

The seventh-seed, Spain's Tommy Robredo fell 6-2, 6-1 to Croatia's Mario Ancic, while Lleyton Hewitt of Australia edged Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic 7-5, 6-4.

Djokovic will face Ancic in the quarterfinals, while Chardy will play Gasquet. The former world No. 1 Hewitt, a four-time winner of this Australian Open tuneup, will face Nalbandian in the quarterfinals. Hewitt last won this title in 2005.

The 2009 Sydney titlist will take home $78,500.
