Wed 14th, January 2009

Auckland, New Zealand (Sports Network) - Top seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina overcame a first-set loss to beat Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the $480,750 Heineken Open, a final hardcourt Australian Open tune-up.

Del Potro, playing in his first match of 2009, advanced to meet Serbian Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinals, as Troicki upended eighth-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina on Wednesday, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Also winning on Day 3 was second seed David Ferrer of Spain, the 2007 Auckland champ. Ferrer defeated Frenchman Marc Gicquel 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4 to setup a quarterfinal against reigning Auckland champ Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Spain's Nicolas Almagro, the fourth seed, won over Taipei's Yen-Hsun Lu 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2 and will play sixth-seeded American Sam Querrey in the quarters. Querrey dismissed qualifier Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The fifth-seeded and defending champion Kohlschreiber, of Germany, snuck past former top-ranked Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) in a rematch of last year's finale here, which was also won by the German.

American qualifier John Isner, who upset seventh-seeded Albert Montanes of Spain in the opening round, kept rolling with a 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-5) win over countryman Robby Ginepri.

Isner's quarterfinal opponent will be third-seeded Swede Robin Soderling, who topped American qualifier Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
