Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - Manny Harris led all scorers with 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as 15th-ranked Michigan hammered Houston Baptist, 77-55, at Crisler Arena.
DeShawn Sims hit 5-of-8 from three-point range and totaled 22 points and six boards for Michigan (2-0), which got off to an impressive start to the season by blasting Northern Michigan last Saturday, 97-50. Zack Novak went for eight points and seven boards.
"We really got off to a bad start," Michigan head coach John Beilein said. "Some shots didn't fall and it affected us. We didn't play well on defense and then we didn't execute on offense. We got ourselves in a little bit of a whole, but thank goodness we could dig ourselves out from there."
Mario Flaherty turned in a solid performance with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Houston Baptist (0-4), which has had a rough start in the early going this season, dropping all four of its games by double digits. Andrew Gonzalez donated 14 points, while Remy Boswell added 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Upset-minded Houston Baptist stayed with Michigan in the early going and led, 18-17, after Wendell Preadom made a jumper with a little over seven minutes left in the first half.
However, the Wolverines would soon wake up from their slow start, as Sims' sparked a 24-11 run with two straight three-pointers, and Michigan was up 41-29 lead at the break.
The second half didn't prove to be much of a contest, as Stu Douglass hit from beyond the arc to stretch the Wolverines lead to 70-42 with nearly 9 1/2 minutes remaining; Michigan would cruise to the easy victory.
Game Notes
This was the first-ever meeting between Houston Baptist and Michigan on the hardwood...Preadom finished with six points.
