No. 25 Maryland welcomes New Hampshire to College Park

Fri 20th, November 2009

College Park, MD (Sports Network) - The 25th-ranked Maryland Terrapins close out a season-opening three-game homestand this evening, as they welcome the New Hampshire Wildcats to the Comcast Center.

Gary Williams' Terrapins have certainly looked impressive in their first two outings, posting lopsided wins over both Charleston Southern (89-51) and most recently, Fairfield (71-42). Maryland won 21 games a year ago and with a solid nucleus returning to College Park, another strong campaign is on the horizon.

New Hampshire opened up the 2009-10 season with an easy victory over Suffolk (91-45). The Wildcats would like to get off to a fast start this season after finishing a mere 14-16 a year ago. Head coach Bill Herion is in his fifth season at the helm and the hope is that New Hampshire will improve on last year's fourth-place finish in the America East Conference.

This marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams.

The Wildcats won their third consecutive home opener by making light work of Suffolk University in a 46-point romp. Junior Dane DeLiegro and freshman Chandler Rhoads led the way with 14 points apiece. Three others notched double digits in support, with Alvin Abreu netting 12 points and Tyrone Conley and Colbey Santos chipping in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. DeLiegro was a force on the glass as well, recording his sixth career double-double with 15 rebounds. New Hampshire shot the ball well (.478) and pulled down a whopping 49 rebounds in the game, including 23 on the offensive glass. Getting second chances will be a must in College Park this evening.

After two games, it is apparent that Maryland has the ability to dominate at either end of the floor. In the most recent outing, it was defensive tenacity that led the team to victory. Maryland held Fairfield to a meager 29 percent shooting effort, including a paltry 19 percent in the second half. The 42 points surrendered were the fewest allowed by the team since 2004. Eric Hayes led the way offensively with 14 points, followed closely by Sean Mosley (13 pts). Landon Milbourne helped out as well with 10 points and eight boards. Standout guard Greivis Vasquez struggled, hitting just 3-of-11 shots and finishing the game with seven points. Mosley leads the team in scoring after two games at 14.0 ppg. Milbourne is next (13.0 ppg), followed by Hayes (12.0 ppg). Vasquez (8.0 ppg) has not erupted yet in terms of scoring, but he does have 19 assists in the first two games.
