Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Quincy Pondexter set career-highs in points and rebounds with 30 and 15, respectively, and 14th-ranked Washington defeated a feisty San Jose State squad, 80-70.
Pondexter went 10-of-18 from the field and 10-of-13 from the free throw line for Washington (4-0), which has won all four games at home this season. Isaiah Thomas added 16 points in the victory, and Tyreese Breshers contributed 12 points and seven boards for the Huskies.
"Quincy had a monster game. He just really played well," said Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar. "The first day that we had practice and put the zone offense in, the first person we talked about was Quincy. Try to get the ball to Quincy because he is really effective in the middle of that zone."
Adrian Oliver had a game-high 32 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans (1-1), who opened their season with a win over William Jessup. Justin Graham added 12 points and seven boards, and Chris Oakes scored eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds in defeat.
"It was nice (to come back and face my old teammates), but it would have been nicer if we had gotten the win," Oliver, who transferred from Washington following the 2006-07 season. "Like I always say, I don't care if I score five or thirty points as long as we get the win. So, tonight's not going to sit well with me."
Trailing, 22-19, in the early portion of the game, Washington ripped off eight straight points to go in front by five. Justin Holiday's jumper with 6:23 left in the half put the home team ahead, 27-22.
San Jose State kept the game close before halftime, and the teams went into the break with Washington leading, 37-31.
Chris Jones' layup five minutes into the second half pulled the Spartans to within 47-43; however, that was as close as they got for the remainder of the game.
An ensuing 10-3 run by Washington pushed its lead to 11. Pondexter began the burst with a bucket and a free throw, and Breshers followed with consecutive jumpers. A three from Elston Turner made it 57-46 with just over 12 minutes remaining.
A dunk by Pondexter five minutes later stretched the advantage to 14, 66-52, and the Huskies led by double digits for the remainder of the game.
