Kansas is unanimous choice in final poll

Mon 15th, March 2010

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Kansas spent most of the season as the No. 1 team in men's basketball and on Monday was voted a unanimous top choice in the final Associated Press poll.

The Jayhawks (32-2), winners of the regular season title and tournament crown in the Big 12, received all 65 first-place votes and a total of 1,625 points from a nationwide media panel.

Kansas was No. 1 for all but four weeks and was never ranked lower than third. The only other teams to ascend to the top spot this season were Texas, Kentucky and Syracuse. The Longhorns spent two weeks at the top, but struggled from there and received just one vote in the final poll.

Kentucky, the SEC regular season and tournament champion, finished second, followed by Duke, which shared the ACC regular-season crown and won the tournament title. Syracuse, which won the Big East regular season title and was knocked out in the tournament quarterfinals, finished fourth, swapping places in the final poll with Duke.

Each of the top four teams received No. 1 seeds for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Big Ten champion Ohio State finished fifth and was followed by Big East tourney champ West Virginia, Big 12 runner-up Kansas State, New Mexico, Villanova and Purdue. The Boilermakers dropped four spots from sixth after a blowout loss to Minnesota in the Big Ten semifinals.

The second 10 consisted of Butler, Temple, Michigan State, Georgetown, Tennessee, Wisconsin, BYU, Pittsburgh, Baylor and Maryland. Temple jumped five places after winning its third straight Atlantic 10 Tournament title, while Georgetown vaulted eight places after knocking off Syracuse in the Big East quarters and making a run to the tourney championship game.

Vanderbilt, Gonzaga, Texas A&M, Richmond and Xavier were the last five teams ranked. Richmond was unranked last week and replaced UTEP, which lost to Houston in the championship game of the Conference USA Tournament.
