Memphis loses Garcia to pro ball overseas

Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Memphis' Angel Garcia intends to sign a contract to play professional basketball in Spain immediately following the fall semester.

Garcia, a 6-foot-11 forward, has averaged 6.1 points and 3.0 rebounds in eight games this season for the 13th-ranked Tigers.

"This is and was a very difficult decision for me," said Garcia, a native of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. "Memphis has been my home the past three years, and I love the city, my teammates and coaches. However, I received an opportunity that can help my family financially, and it was an offer I couldn't refuse."

Garcia sat out the 2008-09 campaign, then suffered a knee injury that limited him to 12 games last year.

"We fully support Angel in his decision to play professional basketball in Spain and will continue to follow his career," Tigers head coach Josh Pastner said. "We wish him all the best and happiness as he pursues his basketball career at the professional level."

The news comes just two days after Memphis learned it will be without leading scoring Wesley Witherspoon for five weeks following knee surgery.

To fill the void, Pastner took the redshirt off freshman Hippolyte Tsafack, a 6-foot-8 forward from Cameroon.
