GAME NOTES: Winners of seven straight games to open the 2007-08 season, the seventh-ranked Duke Blue Devils make the short trip to Charlotte this weekend to take on the Davidson Wildcats in non-conference action at Bobcats Arena. Mike Krzyzewski's squad has looked impressive in the early stages of the season, winning the Maui Invitational last week and routing 20th-ranked Wisconsin just a couple of days ago (82-58) to remain unbeaten in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge (9-0). Following this game, Duke will return to Durham for two straight against Michigan and Albany before heading to New York City for a showdown with nationally-ranked Pittsburgh in the Aeropostale Classic. The Wildcats have played well this season even in defeat. The team is 3-2 on the year, with narrow losses to top-ranked North Carolina (72-68) and Western Michigan (83-76). More recently, Davidson has put together two straight wins, topping North Carolina Central (98-5) and then Appalachian State (71-60) in the Southern Conference opener. This game is the 103rd installment of this in- state rivalry. The Blue Devils own an 85-17 edge in the series and have won the last 20 meetings.
The Blue Devils shot just .426 from the floor, but still made light work of the previously undefeated Badgers, as they connected on 11 three-pointers, en route to the 24-point victory. Defensively, Duke was able to force 18 Wisconsin turnovers, turning them into 23 points. Five players finished in double figures in the win, led by Greg Paulus' 18 points. Taylor King and Jon Scheyer gave the team great effort off the bench, adding 15 and 10 points, respectively. King, a talented freshman guard, hit five three-pointers in the game, while Scheyer just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Another freshman, Kyle Singler chipped in 13 points, while Gerald Henderson added 11 points to the cause. The Blue Devils struggled to produce points last year, but have done a complete 180-degrees this season, showing great scoring depth with five players averaging double digits. Singler leads the way with 14.1 ppg, thanks to an impressive .589 shooting. Henderson is next in line with 12.7 ppg, followed by DeMarcus Nelson (12.0 ppg), King (10.9 ppg) and Scheyer (10.4 ppg).
The Wildcats certainly have the personnel to go basket-for-basket with most teams in the country. Davidson is averaging a solid 86.6 ppg this year, thanks to .457 shooting from the floor. In addition, the team is enjoying a +7.6 rebounding edge and is forcing 20 turnovers per game. Sophomore guard Stephen Curry has been almost unstoppable in the early going. The 6-3 youngster is shooting .500 from the floor and .418 from behind the arc, leading to an eye- popping 26.0 ppg. Jason Richards is a distant second in the scoring column at 11.2 ppg, with Thomas Sander rounding out the double-digit threats at 10.2 ppg. In the win over Appalachian State, Curry erupted for a career-high and Holmes Center record 38 points. Curry was 14-of-27 from the floor and tied the school record with nine three-pointers. Sander provided some support with 13 points, while Boris Meno chipped in with 10.
The Wildcats are a good team, but the Blue Devils are simply running on a few more cylinders at this time. Davidson will certainly make a game of it, especially early on, but Duke will distance itself down the stretch and pick up win number eight on the year.
