GAME NOTES: Still winless on the road and in Southern Conference play this season, the Bulldogs of The Citadel give it another shot tonight as they challenge the UNC Greensboro Spartans at Fleming Gym. On Saturday, the Bulldogs lost their second straight outing and the third in the last four with a 63-50 setback to Appalachian State at home. The decision also dropped the Bulldogs to 0-4 in league action. As for the Spartans, they won their fifth straight game over the weekend with a 79-67 triumph over Georgia Southern in conference action. The victory pushed UNCG to 4-1 at home and 2-1 in league action thus far. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, The Citadel leads by a count of 9-5 heading into tonight's meeting.
The Bulldogs shot just 29.3 percent from the field against ASU on Saturday afternoon and converted a mere 9-of-30 chances behind the three-point line, en route to the 13-point home loss. Tyrell McDowell tried to keep his team competitive with 15 points and eight rebounds, both of which were team highs, while Zach Urbanus chipped in 12 points and six boards as he made 4-of-8 shots behind the three-point line. Cameron Wells, one of three players to have started all 13 games for the Bulldogs this season, leads the group with his 14.1 ppg and also has a team high with 44 assists as well. Urbanus is responsible for 11.1 ppg as the unit produces 68.8 ppg on just 41.5 percent shooting from the field.
Ahead by just a single point at the break, following a woeful 32.1 percent shooting effort from the floor, the Spartans opened up in the second half and converted 60.9 percent from the field to cruise to the 12-point win over Georgia Southern. Kevin Oleksiak erupted for 29 points on the strength of 5- of-11 from three-point range and 10-of-12 at the free-throw line, followed by Ben Stywall and Kyle Hines with 16 and 15 points, respectively. One of the top scorers in the Southern Conference, Hines is posting 17.2 ppg this season on 50.9 percent from the field. The team leader with 38 of the 54 blocked shots, Hines is also the top man on the glass with close to nine and a half boards per game as well. Oleksiak's 45.8 percent effort beyond the arc has carried him to 12.1 ppg. From a defensive standpoint, UNCG has held opponents to just 65.8 ppg this season, but the offense has produced just 69.2 ppg as well.
The five wins for the Bulldogs haven't been all that impressive, considering the first over Daniel Webster (131-79) in the opener did a lot to pad their stats. The Spartans may not be the cream of the crop in the Southern Conference, but they are the better team here.
