GAME NOTES: The Richmond Spiders tip off the Atlantic 10 Conference portion of their 2007-08 schedule this afternoon as they visit the La Salle Explorers at Tom Gola Arena in Philadelphia. The Spiders have been riding a recent hot streak with three straight wins, thanks to a 52-49 victory over Virginia Tech last week at home. All three of the triumphs have come against programs from the state of Virginia (Old Dominion and VMI), pushing the squad a game over .500 at the moment at 7-6. As for the Explorers, who are playing just their fourth home game of the campaign, they dropped their fourth in a row on Saturday at Florida State, producing an 81-76 setback. The loss was the sixth in the last seven games for La Salle, which hasn't won at home since topping Central Connecticut by four points (59-55) back on November 28th. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Explorers lead by a count of 11-9, with La Salle capturing a 79-56 victory in the most recent encounter last January. With the victory, the Explorers have now beaten the Spiders in three straight matchups.

With six seconds remaining in regulation, David Gonzalvez knocked down a pair of free throws to help seal the win over Virginia Tech last week for the Spiders. Gonzalvez finished the outing with a game-best 17 points, sinking all four of his attempts at the charity stripe, the team finishing up a perfect 7- of-7 at the stripe on the night. Kevin Smith added 13 points off the bench as he made good on all six of his field goal attempts, contributing five assists and five rebounds as well. Gonzalvez remains the second-best scorer for Richmond at the moment with his 10.8 ppg, shooting almost as well from three- point range (.446) as he is the field overall (.448). Dan Geriot paces the unit in both scoring (12.8 ppg) and rebounding (5.1 rpg) as one of three players to have started all 13 games thus far. Not much of an offensive program, Richmond is producing just 60.0 ppg this season, but at least the squad, which is clearing a mere 29.2 rpg, is giving up only 62.6 ppg.

La Salle led for all but three minutes and change against the Seminoles over the weekend, but the visitors picked the wrong time to let up versus FSU in the five-point setback. Jerrell Williams had a huge game off the bench for the Explorers as he posted 12 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds in 25 minutes of action. Rodney Green was responsible for a team-best 16 points and Darnell Harris 13 points as he knocked down 4-of-6 chances behind the three- point line. The team shot 50.9 percent from the field and an even better 53.8 percent out on the perimeter. A starter in all 12 games for the program, Harris is averaging an even 16.0 ppg on the strength of an incredible 51.6 percent (49-of-95) behind the three-point line. The sharpshooter is credited with just 44 percent accuracy from the field overall and 67.9 percent at the charity stripe. Green checks in with 12.3 ppg and Williams 9.5 ppg to go along with a team-high 6.7 rpg.

La Salle has the potential to put up points from time to time, but the squad is more likely going to be on the short end of such offensive efforts.
