GAME NOTES: The UNC Greensboro Spartans kick off a five-game road trip tonight, as they tangle with the Chattanooga Mocs in Southern Conference action at McKenzie Arena. The Spartans enter the tilt on a roll, as they have won a season-high six games in a row. The team recently wrapped up a three- game homestand by trouncing The Citadel, 84-54, on Monday. With the win, UNCG improved to 9-4 overall and 3-1 at home. The squad now hits the road, where it has gone an even 3-3 thus far. The Spartans' road trip will consume the rest of the month, as they won't play a home game until a date with Elon on February 2nd. As for Chattanooga, it has also played well of late, winning six of its past seven outings, including two in a row. The most recent of the team's triumphs came on Saturday, a 77-60 decision over Furman. The victory kept the Mocs perfect in SoCon play at 5-0 and in the process improved them to 10-5 overall. Chattanooga leads the all-time series with UNCG, 12-8, but the Spartans won both meetings a season ago.
The Spartans come into the contest scoring 70.3 ppg off 44.6 percent shooting from the floor, with three players averaging in double figures. Kyle Hines is one of the elite players in the SoCon and he leads UNCG in scoring (17.5 ppg), rebounding (9.0 rpg), blocked shots (39) and even steals (20). Kevin Oleksiak is next in line with 12.0 ppg and he is also dishing out 2.5 apg, while Mikko Koivisto chips in with 10.6 ppg behind 47.5 percent shooting from three-point range. In the team's last game, Hines made all 10 of his field goal attempts and he finished with 22 points in a rout of The Citadel on Monday. Oleksiak tallied 11 points and dished out six helpers for the Spartans, who connected on 54.8 percent of their total shots. The team also won the battle on the boards, 39-28.
The Mocs have thrived on offense this season, as they are pouring in a hardy 78.8 ppg behind 47.6 percent shooting from the field. The squad has also fared well on the boards, outrebounding its foes by 7.9 rpg. Stephen McDowell currently leads the team in scoring at 15.7 ppg and he is hitting on 37.8 percent of his attempts from long distance. Nicchaeus Doaks is the squad's top rebounder with 6.5 rpg and he also chips in with 12.3 ppg. In the squad's last outing, McDowell sank 5-of-14 three-pointers en route to 21 points in a 77-60 triumph over Furman on Saturday. Doaks contributed 17 points for Chattanooga, which made good on 48.2 percent of its field goal tries. The Mocs even controlled the glass, 46-34, in the triumph.
Both teams have had success this season, especially of late, and that should make for an entertaining affair tonight. Chattanooga though, gets the nod playing at home and with another big showing on offense and the boards, it should be able to post the victory here.
