Manhattan (7-7) at Canisius (2-12)

GAME NOTES: Still waiting for their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the 2007-08 season, the Canisius Golden Griffins give it another shot tonight as they host the Manhattan Jaspers at the Koessler Center in Buffalo. Forget about the fact that the Griffs have gone 0-4 in league play, the team has won just two games overall this season, topping Coastal Carolina and Maine. More recently the squad was pitted against Rider on Sunday and was treated to a humiliating 102-51 setback, the team's second in a row and the fourth in the last five outings. The 51-point setback was the largest conference loss in school history for Canisius. Meanwhile, the Jaspers have hit a patch of bad luck as well in recent weeks, falling in three straight after posting just their second two-game win streak of the campaign. On Monday night, the team was treated to a 76-66 setback at the hands of Marist on the road, dropping Manhattan down in the conference standings to 1-3. In terms of the all-time series between these two programs, Manhattan is in charge with a 41-29 advantage. Last season, the team's split a pair of meetings, each winning on the other's home floor.

Lawrence Jolicoeur came off the bench to knock down all nine of his free-throw attempts and 2-of-3 behind the three-point line on Monday night, finishing with 17 points, but that still wasn't enough to keep the Jaspers out of the loss column. Also scoring in double figures for the squad was Rashad Green with 12 points, but the unit shot just 32.3 percent from the field. The fact that Marist made a mere 20-of-37 at the charity stripe should have helped the Manhattan cause, but it didn't. Perhaps the biggest problem with the Jaspers this season is that they lack consistency in the starting lineup. The squad doesn't have a single player who has started every game and in just the four conference outings the program is being outscored by 10 ppg. Overall, the leading scorer for Manhattan is Antoine Pearson with his 12.9 ppg, followed by part-time starter Devon Austin with 10.1 ppg. In MAAC games, the group is shooting only 39.8 percent from the field and is getting beaten on the glass by almost six rebounds per outing.

To say that Canisius performed miserably on Sunday would be an understatement. The squad didn't have a single starter score more than four points, combining to shoot a woeful 4-of-19 from the floor before being pulled. Backup Elton Frazier fared a bit better with a 7-of-14 effort and 6-of-6 at the free-throw line for his 22 points, but that wasn't nearly enough as the team suffered one of its largest defeats in program history. The Griffs shot just 31.5 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 19 times on the day. Just like the Jaspers, Canisius is also without a single player who has started every game, with Frank Turner being the lone double-digit scorer for the group with his 11.1 ppg. However, Turner is shooting just 39.1 percent from the field, 25.8 percent beyond the arc and a miserable 56.9 percent at the free-throw line. One saving grace for him, if there is one, is that he has handed out 74 assists, three times as many as any of his teammates.

Canisius was embarrassed by Rider over the weekend and now the stats show the team being outscored by 15 ppg this year. While it truly isn't all that bad, the Griffs shouldn't expect to bounce back right away.
