GAME NOTES: The Wake Forest Demon Deacons put their 14-game home winning streak on the line today, as they host the Florida State Seminoles in ACC action at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. The Demon Deacons enter the tilt on a low note, as they were downed at Maryland, 71-64, on Tuesday. It was the second straight loss for WF, which dropped to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Deacons though, now return home, where they have won 14 games in a row, including all 10 this season. As for FSU, it is also coming off a loss, dropping a 70-57 decision to nationally-ranked Duke on Wednesday. The setback was the second straight for the Seminoles, who fell to 12-6 overall and 1-2 in ACC play. The team now heads back out to the road, where it has posted an even 2-2 ledger thus far. Head coach Leonard Hamilton is going for his 300th career win in this game and 100th at Florida State. With respect to the all-time series, WF owns a 20-15 advantage over FSU, although the Seminoles have won two of the last three meetings.
FSU shot a dismal 35.5 percent from the field and it made only 3-of-13 three- point field goals, as it suffered a 70-57 loss to Duke earlier in the week. The team also lost the battle on the boards by a 44-32 margin. Jason Rice paced the Seminoles in defeat with 18 points and six rebounds, while Toney Douglas had 14 points and three assists. For the season, Douglas leads the squad in scoring at 13.9 ppg and he is also tenacious defender, recording a team-high 46 steals. Isaiah Swann is second with 12.4 ppg and he is knocking down 40.2 percent of his shots from behind the arc. Rich adds 12.3 ppg and 5.0 rpg to the mix, while Uche Echefu puts forth 11.8 ppg and a team-high 7.3 rpg. Ralph Mims chips in with 10.4 ppg for FSU, which is averaging 74.9 ppg on 46.5 percent shooting from the field this season.
Wake was simply dreadful from long range in its last game, hitting on just 5- of-30 three-point attempts in a 71-64 loss to Maryland. The team made just 7- of-12 free throws and it shot a lackluster 34.7 percent from the floor in the setback, overall. Ishmael Smith paced the Deacons with 16 points and six assists, while James Johnson logged 14 points and seven rebounds. For the season, Johnson tops the roster in scoring (14.4 ppg) as well as rebounding (8.5 rpg) and he also has 27 steals to his credit. Jeff Teague turns in 11.0 ppg and he has recorded a team-high 42 steals, while L.D. Williams rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.1 ppg. As a team, the Deacons are producing 71.1 ppg and hitting on 42.0 percent of their attempts from the floor this season.
Wake has been at its best at home this season and behind the support of its fans, expect the Demon Deacons to get back on track today.
