GAME NOTES: The best meets the worst in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, as the Siena Saints will host the Canisius Golden Griffins this evening at the Times Union Center. It has been a very tough season for the Golden Griffins, as they head into this matchup with just three victories in 17 games. However, one of those wins came this past Friday, as Canisius downed Niagara, 70-62. It was the first league win for the Griffs, who are now 1-6 in league play. Canisius has been terrible on the road this year, losing all eight of its matchups away from home. As for the Saints, they have won three consecutive games. The latest victory came this past Thursday, as the team defeated Manhattan, 69-56, pushing its league mark to 6-1. Next up for Siena will be back-to-back road games against Loyola Maryland and Iona. The Saints have won four straight games against Canisius and have a 41-26 edge in the all-time series.
The Golden Griffins have struggled offensively, as the team is netting a mere 60.2 ppg, while shooting only 39.8 percent from the floor. Frank Turner has been a leader for the Griffs, as the guard is the only player posting double figures (11.9 ppg). Turner is also pacing the team with 77 assists and is pulling down 4.5 rpg. Shockingly, the last time Canisius was on the court the team put forth a solid offensive effort, scoring 70 points en route to an eight-point win over Niagara. In the victory, Canisius shot a solid 45.3 percent from the field and won the battle on the glass, 40-32. Turner once again led the way, scoring 17 points. Bob Bevilacqua, Willie Hassell and Tomas Vazquez-Simmons each tallied 10 points in the win.
Unlike their counterpart, the Saints have had no problems posting points this season, as the team is averaging an impressive 77.4 ppg, while shooting 45.0 percent from the floor. Edwin Ubiles has been the top option for Siena, as the forward is netting 16.6 ppg, while also grabbing 4.1 rpg. Kenny Hasbrouck is also playing extremely well this year, and comes into this game with 15.1 ppg. Alex Franklin has been solid in the paint, posting 14.6 ppg, while collecting a team-best 7.5 rpg. The last time Siena was on the court, it grabbed a 13-point win over Manhattan. The Saints shot 43.9 percent from the field in the contest and made 10-of-23 shots from behind the arc. Hasbrouck led the way with 17 points in the win, while Franklin posted a double-double, scoring 15 points to go along with 10 rebounds. As for Ubiles, he finished with 14 points.
The Saints are without question the better team, especially at the offensive end. Look for Siena to take an early lead and never look back.
