GAME NOTES: Coming off their biggest win of the season, the Connecticut Huskies will attempt to keep the momentum going this evening, as they host the Louisville Cardinals in Big East action at the XL Center in Hartford. Jim Calhoun's team took a break from conference action over the weekend and went into Bloomington to battle nationally-ranked Indiana. Despite missing a pair of key contributors due to suspensions, the Huskies still prevailed over the Hoosiers, 68-63. The victory was the third straight win for UConn and its second upset of a top-25 team in six days. Connecticut will get another shot at a ranked opponent this upcoming weekend, when it plays host to the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Cardinals are starting to heat up at the right time as well. Rick Pitino's squad has won two straight games and six of its last seven overall to move 10 games over .500 at 15-5. The Cardinals are also now 5-2 in league play, a game ahead of the Huskies and just one game behind league leading Georgetown (6-1). The team was last in action on Saturday, a 67-57 win over St. John's. This is just the sixth all-time meeting between these two teams. UConn won the first three meetings, but it was Louisville getting a season-sweep last year, taking a pair of decisions.
There is plenty of scoring balance on the Louisville roster this year, but it has been the defensive effort game-in and game-out which has fueled the Cardinals thus far. The team is one of the top defensive squads in the Big East this year, holding foes well under 40 percent shooting (.376), leading to just 60.2 ppg. Jerry Smith and Terrence Williams share the scoring lead with 11.6 ppg. However, it is Williams who is certainly the more dangerous player on the court, as he is grabbing 8.0 rpg, while also pacing the team in assists (98). Three more players are averaging double-digits on the year, with Earl Clark (11.0 ppg), David Padgett (10.5 ppg) and Derrick Caracter (10.4 ppg) all making significant contributions. Clark is the team's top performer down low, leading the Cardinals in both rebounding (8.8 rpg) and blocked shots (34). In the 10- point win over St. John's, Smith led the way with 15 points. Andre McGee added 10 points to the cause, while Williams finished with eight points, eight rebounds and eight assists. The Cardinals held St. John's to a miserable .321 shooting and forced 17 turnovers in the game.
The Huskies were without leading scorer Jerome Dyson (14.3 ppg) as well as key reserve Doug Wiggins (6.6 ppg), but the team still pulled off the upset of the Hoosiers. The team netted just 68 points in the game, but five players finished in double figures. Craig Austrie got the start in Dyson's place and notched a team-high 15 points in the win. A.J. Price had a terrific all-around game, finishing with 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Center Hasheem Thabeet added 12 points to the cause, while forwards Jeff Adrien and Stanley Robinson both recorded double-doubles with 11 points and 11 boards each. The Huskies really took it to the Hoosiers in the paint, outrebounding Indiana, 44-28 and outscoring the home team down low, 34-16. Dyson is suspended indefinitely, but as the team proved over the weekend, it has the ability to absorb the loss. Adrien is the team's centerpiece in the frontcourt. He is averaging 14.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game and has recorded nine double- doubles on the year. He gets plenty of help from Thabeet (11.2 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 72 blocks) and Robinson (10.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg). Price (14.0 ppg, 6.2 apg) now must lead the charge from the perimeter, but as was the case against Indiana, others like Austrie (5.1 ppg) have the ability to step up.
The Cardinals are playing at a high level right now, but the Huskies have been rejuvenated over the last week or so and behind another strong performance from the big guys down low, they should be able to fend off Louisville and climb back into the Big East race.
