GAME NOTES: A set of teams trying to get back on track meet up at the Dunkin' Donuts Center tonight, as the DePaul Blue Demons battle the Providence Friars in Big East action. After a fast start to conference play, the Demons have slowed down, losing each of their past three outings. On Saturday, DePaul's road woes continued, as it was downed at Notre Dame, 89-80. It was the third loss in a row on the road for the Demons, who fell to 9-12 overall and 4-5 in league play. As for Providence, it has suffered four straight defeats following a winning streak of three games. Most recently, the team was defeated for a second straight time at home, dropping a 77-65 decision to West Virginia on Saturday. With the loss, the Friars dipped to 12-9 overall and just 3-6 against Big East foes. Providence leads the all-time series with DePaul, 17-6, but the Demons posted a 70-65 victory in an earlier encounter this season.
DePaul was dominated on the offensive glass, 21-12, and it was outscored at the foul line by a decisive 17-1 margin, as it was defeated by Notre Dame this past weekend. It wasn't all bad though for the Demons, who shot 48.6 percent from the field, including an 11-of-23 effort from downtown. Dar Tucker paced the team in defeat with 19 points, while Mac Koshwal had 18 points and nine boards. Draelon Burns also got involved, scoring 17 points and corralling five caroms. For the season, Burns ranks first on the club in scoring at 17.5 ppg and he has also recorded a team-best 37 steals. Tucker contributes 13.2 ppg and 5.3 rpg for DePual, while Koshwal turns in 11.8 ppg and a team-high 8.0 rpg. Overall, the Demons are producing a solid 73.4 ppg this season, although they are giving up a slightly higher 74.9 ppg.
The Friars simply could not slow down WVU on Saturday, allowing it to shoot 50.9 percent from the floor, including 7-of-13 from long distance, in a 77-65 setback. Providence was also outrebounded, 33-25, and outscored at the charity stripe, 14-8, in the loss. Randall Hanke led the charge for Providence with 18 points, while Brian McKenzie chipped in with 11 points. Jeff Xavier dished out a team-best seven assists, be finished with just five points on a poor 1-of-7 shooting from the floor. Despite the sub par performance, Xavier still tops the roster in both scoring (12.5 ppg) and steals (46) for the season. McKenzie and Weyinmi Efejuku are tied for second in scoring at 11.6 ppg and they are trailed by Dwain Williams' 11.4 ppg average. Geoff McDermott chips in with 10.5 ppg and he is also handing out a team-high 4.8 apg and ripping down a club-best 8.2 rpg. As a whole, Providence is netting 75.4 ppg on 44.7 percent shooting from the floor.
Providence is the more balanced team here and that, along with its homecourt advantage, should give it enough to earn the victory.
