GAME NOTES: The top team in the Big East Conference is set to play host to the league's worst squad, as sixth-ranked Georgetown welcomes South Florida to Washington D.C. today. South Florida is 10-12 overall this season, but that record is clearly overshadowed by a miserable 1-8 mark in conference play. On Saturday, the Bulls played host to a St. John's team that also entered with only one conference win. The home crowd watched in disappointment as South Florida was handled rather easily by a 72-58 final, and there is little reason for confidence this evening. As for Georgetown, it has won its last five games to move to 18-2, and the 8-1 Big East record is good for sole possession of first place. On Saturday, the Hoyas knocked off Seton Hall by a 73-61 final, and in the previous outing they knocked off St. John's by 32 points, the same group of Red Storm that beat South Florida by double figures. Georgetown is a perfect 11-0 at home and heavily favored tonight. The Hoyas hold a 3-2 edge over the Bulls in the brief series between the teams.
South Florida is led by frontcourt standout Kentrell Gransberry, who is scoring 16.7 ppg to go along with 10.8 rpg. Dominique Jones is second on the roster with his 15.8 ppg, and Chris Howard is contributing 10.1 ppg and 5.0 apg. The Bulls actually led St. John's by 16 points in the first half on Saturday, so the fact that they found a way to lose by 14 points represents a 30-point swing. South Florida connected on only 38.8 percent of its field goal attempts in the clash, including a 1-of-12 effort from three-point range. Jones played well in the setback, as he scored 24 points on the strength of a 12-of-15 shooting effort from the foul line. Mobolaji Ajayi pitched in 12 points and nine rebounds, while Gransberry tallied 10 points. Defensively, the Bulldogs permitted the Red Storm to shoot 54.2 percent overall.
Georgetown does not possess the type of player who has proven to take over a game at the offensive end. Rather, the Hoyas rely on solid offensive contributions from many individuals and a strong collective effort at the defensive end. Roy Hibbert, the team's 7-2 center, is scoring 13.2 ppg to go along with 6.9 rpg and 39 blocks, and while those numbers are certainly solid, Hibbert has yet to play up to his potential. DaJuan Summers is scoring 10.7 ppg for the Hoyas, and Jessie Sapp checks in with 10.0 ppg. Georgetown is scoring 72.2 ppg this season while limiting the opposition to 56.9 ppg on 35.2 percent shooting from the field. In the victory over Seton Hall on Saturday, Sapp scored 17 points for the Hoyas, while Hibbert checked in with 16 points and nine rebounds. Georgetown turned the ball over 21 times, but it earned a 49-21 rebounding advantage and limited the Pirates to 35.8 percent shooting from the floor.
Clearly, this game figures to be lopsided, as Georgetown is far superior to South Florida. The Hoyas will jump on top early and never look back.
