GAME NOTES: Middle-of-the-pack squads in the Southern Conference tangle at Fleming Gym, as the UNC Greensboro Spartans host the Wofford Terriers tonight in a critical conference matchup. The Terriers seem to have turned their season around following a three-game skid in early January. With victories in five of its last six contests, Wofford has pulled back to the .500 mark in conference play. Their last time on the court, the Terriers dominated Furman by a 75-42 margin by connecting on 56.9 percent from the floor. UNC Greensboro, meanwhile, was just as hot as the Terriers before getting rocked by Georgia Southern on Monday night. The Spartans had won four consecutive games before the 80-78 setback on their home floor. UNCG bricked six of seven free throws late in the game and missed four of its final five shots in the upset. Wofford gave the Spartans a similar heartbreaking loss earlier in the season, when a three- pointer with four seconds left gave the Terriers a 66-65 victory of their conference foes. The win increased Wofford's edge in the head-to-head meetings to 13-6.
Drew Gibson's all-around game has brought Wofford back to relevance in the SoCon. While pouring in 11.1 ppg on 44.2 percent shooting from the floor, the guard paces the team with 112 assists. He connected on all four three-point attempts for a game-high 18 points in the 33-point victory over Furman, and was the three-point hero in the Terriers' victory over UNCG earlier in the season. Shane Nichols leads the team with 14.9 ppg, while Junior Salters has chipped in 9.7 ppg on a team-high 48 three-pointers. On the glass, Tim Johnson and Noah Dahlman are pulling down 5.6 rebounds apiece per game.
The prolific triumvirate of Kyle Hines, Kevin Oleksiak and Mikko Koivisto wasn't enough to pull out a victory over Georgia Southern on Monday. The three combined for 56 points, as the rest of the Spartans logged a total of just 22 points. Kevin Oleksiak paced the squad with 20 points and eight assists to increase his season average to 10.8 points and 3.7 assists per game. Koivisto logged 17 points to up his season average to 10.8 ppg, while All-American hopeful Kyle Hines continued his dominating inside repertoire with a typical 19-point, nine-rebound effort.
Tonight's matchup features two teams battling to stay relevant in the Southern Conference. While the Terriers have improved their play, the Spartans boast a ton of weapons and have the home crowd and a recent setback still fresh on their minds.
