GAME NOTES: The Rider Broncs will try to remain on top of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings when they host the Niagara Purple Eagles this evening at the Alumni Gym. The Purple Eagles have played well over the past couple of weeks, winning three of their last four contests, including a hard fought, 83-79 victory over Loyola-Maryland this past Tuesday. With the victory over the Greyhounds, the Purple Eagles are now 8-4 in league action, placing the team in a three way tie for third place with Marist and Loyola-Maryland. Niagara has done well on the road this season, posting a 6-5 ledger away from home. As for the Broncs, they have collected nine consecutive wins with the most recent victory coming this past Saturday, as the team defeated Siena by an 89-75 margin. The recent streak has propelled the Broncs to the top of the MAAC standings with a 10-2 ledger. Rider has also done a terrific job at the Alumni Gym, posting a strong 8-1 record. The Purple Eagles grabbed a convincing, 89-77 victory over the Broncs earlier this season. With the win, Niagara now leads the all-time series by a 17-8 margin.
The Purple Eagles possess one of the most dangerous scoring threats in the nation in Charron Fisher. Fisher is currently second in the country with an impressive 26.7 ppg. Also, the forward is leading the Purple Eagles with 9.0 rpg. Tyrone Lewis is shooting below 40.0 percent on the season, but that has not stop the guard from producing 16.3 ppg. Stanley Hodge rounds out the double-figure scorers with 12.2 ppg on the year. As a whole, Niagara has been impressive at the offensive end of the floor, netting 76.0 ppg. The last time Niagara was on the court, the team used its strong offensive play to slip past the Greyhounds by a four-point margin. The Purple Eagles shot 45.1 percent from the floor and made 29-of-40 shots from the charity stripe. Fisher led the way with 31 points and nine boards, while Lewis added 20 points. Benson Egemonye contributed 15 points and four blocks in the win, while Hodge chipped in 12 points, despite shooting just 2-of-8 from the floor.
The Broncs are riding the play of brothers Jason and Ryan Thompson. Jason Thompson has been outstanding for Rider and is without question one of the top players in the MAAC. The forward is averaging a double-double on the season, netting 20.0 ppg to go along with 11.5 rpg. Younger brother Ryan, is currently contributing 15.5 ppg on the year and is also pulling down 6.4 rpg, while leading the team with 87 assists. Harris Mansell is the only other player netting double-figures for Rider, as the guard is posting 13.3 ppg. The Broncs continued their dominance at the offensive end of the floor this past weekend, as the team cruised to an 89-75 victory over Siena. In the win. the Broncs shot 53.8 percent from the floor and dominated the glass by a 46-21 margin. Jason Thompson had an outstanding showing in the win, scoring 23 points, while tying his own school record with 21 rebounds. As for the other Thompson, Ryan also performed well, scoring 20 points to go along with five boards and five assists. Mansell contributed 13 points, while Justin Robinson and Mike Ringgold tallied 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Purple Eagles are very tough, especially on offense. However, the Broncs are playing too well at this point and the Thompson brothers will likely be too much for Niagara to handle.
