GAME NOTES: The Cornell Big Red will try to remain perfect in Ivy League action when they play the Harvard Crimson this evening at the Lavietes Pavilion. The Big Red have been red-hot and enter this contest with an eight-game winning streak. The last time Cornell was on the floor, the team posted a strong, 87-74 victory over Penn. With the win the Big Red moved to 6-0 in Ivy League play. As for the Crimson, they have struggled tremendously this season and have lost 12 of their last 14 games, including five in a row. The last time Harvard was on the floor the team was embarrassed by Brown, 71-51. The current skid has dropped Harvard's league record to a pathetic 1-5 on the year. Although the Crimson have only six wins up to this point, five of those victories have come at the Lavietes Pavilion. Harvard has won the last two meetings against Cornell, but the Big Red still hold a commanding 85-67 advantage in the all- time series.
The Big Red have ran through the competition for the most part this season, and the team is relying heavily on its play at the offensive end of the floor. Cornell is currently averaging 76.5 ppg, while shooting a solid 48.5 percent from the floor. Ryan Wittman is pacing the team with 15.7 ppg and is shooting a ridiculous 50.8 percent from behind the arc. Louis Dale has done a little of everything for Cornell, as the guard is netting 13.5 ppg to go along with 4.5 rpg and 95 assists. This past weekend, the Big Red snapped an 18-game losing skid against Penn with a strong, 87-74 win over the Quakers. Cornell shot 49.0 percent from the field in the win, and also made 10-of-17 attempts from behind the arc and 27-of-29 shots from the foul line. Wittman led the way with 25 points and also grabbed six boards, while Dale posted 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
This past weekend the Crimson suffered a terrible loss to Brown, falling by a 20-point margin. In the loss, Harvard shot a meager 31.6 percent from the floor and connected on only 7-of-29 shots from behind the arc. It was a horrible showing for a Crimson team that has certainly had its offensive struggles this year, netting 69.3 ppg. In the loss to Brown, the Crimson were led by Alek Blankenau, who scored 14 points, while Kyle Fitzgerald added 10 points. Jeremy Lin, who is pacing the team with 12.3 ppg on the season, struggled against the Bears, connecting on just 3-of-12 shots for a seven point performance.
It is safe to say the Big Red have dominated their league counterparts, as the squad has won five of its six conference matchups by double figures. Tonight should be no different for Cornell.
