(8) Georgetown (20-4) at Providence (13-12)

GAME NOTES: The Georgetown Hoyas close out a brief two-game road trip this afternoon, as they invade the Dunkin' Donuts Center to take on the Providence Friars in Big East action. Heading into the weekend, the Hoyas were all alone atop the Big East standings, but a 77-70 loss at Syracuse coupled with a Louisville win over these same Friars, leaves the two teams tied for the Big East lead with a 10-3 league ledger. It was just the second loss in the last nine games for Georgetown, which has shown some signs of weakness on the road, with all four of its losses coming away from home. The Friars are just above .500 this year (13-12), but have really hit hard times in-conference, sporting a 4-9 record. The team has dropped three straight games and seven of its last eight overall, including that 80-72 setback to the Cardinals this past weekend. This is the 56th all-time meeting between these two teams, with Georgetown holding a 36-19 series advantage. These two teams did not meet last season.

Jonathan Wallace erupted for a career-high 26 points, hitting six three- pointers, but the effort was wasted in a seven-point setback at the Carrier Dome. The Hoyas trailed by 16 points at the half and cut the lead to five in the second stanza, but could not overtake the Orange on their home floor. DaJuan Summers netted 14 points in the loss and Jessie Sapp and Roy Hibbert chipped in 11 each, but the team shot just .418 from the floor, despite a solid 11-of-25 from behind the arc (.440). It was a rather surprising shooting performance, considering the Hoyas lead the Big East in field-goal percentage at .489. The team is also the top defensive unit in the league, pacing the Big East in scoring defense (fifth nationally at 57.5 ppg), holding foes to a meager .357 shooting. The team is at its best when the 7-2 Hibbert can dominate inside. Hibbert has not exactly lived up to his lofty expectations this season, but he has been productive, shooting 60.3 percent from the floor and leading the team in scoring (13.1 ppg), rebounding (6.6 rpg) and blocked shots (50). Summers (11.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg) gives Hibbert help up front. The team employs a three-guard set, with Wallace (10.1 ppg, .426 from three-point range), Sapp (9.7 ppg, team-high 84 assists) and Austin Freeman (9.2 ppg) all making contributions.

The Friars struggled to find their shot against Louisville last time out, converting just 35.8 percent from the floor in the eight-point loss. Providence had its opportunities late to make a run at the Cardinals, but Louisville was able to convert late to win the game. Five players finished in double figures for Providence, led by Geoffrey McDermott's 18 points. Randall Hanke added 14 points, followed by Brian McKenzie (13 pts), Jeff Xavier (11 pts) and Weyinmi Efejuku (10 pts). Offensive balance has not been much of a problem for the Friars this season. The team is netting a decent 74.4 ppg, while shooting .450 from the floor and a solid .390 from behind the arc. Five players are currently averaging double figures, with Hanke just on the outside of that group at 9.7 ppg. Thanks to a team-high 65 three-pointers, Xavier is the top scorer on the roster at 12.4 ppg. McKenzie and Dwain Williams are tied for second with 11.0 ppg apiece. Efejuku (10.7 ppg) and McDermott (10.6 ppg) are not far behind. McDermott is the most versatile player on the roster, leading the team in both rebounds (8.1 rpg) and assists (118).

The Friars have struggled this season, but remain a dangerous team in their own building. That being said, Georgetown's room for error is gone and the Hoyas need to get back to their winning ways to continue their run at the conference crown.
