GAME NOTES: The Ball State Cardinals will try to remain in the win column when they take on the Central Michigan Chippewas this evening in a Mid-American Conference tussle at Rose Arena. It has been a nightmare of a season for Ball State, which has lost 17 games this year. However, the team has still continued to fight, as the squad has posted back-to-back wins. The most recent win was a 59-52 victory over Toledo, which pushed BSU's league ledger to 4-8 on the year. As for the Chippewas, they have dropped three consecutive contests, including a heartbreaking, 67-64 setback to Eastern Michigan this past Saturday. The recent struggles for CMU have dropped the team's to a mere 5-7 in-conference. The Cardinals have dominated the all-time series against Central Michigan, posting a 51-27 edge over the Chippewas and that includes an 82-71 win earlier this season.
Ball State has just five victories on the year, and the main reason for the team's atrocious campaign has been its inability to produce offensively, as the squad is netting just 57.8 ppg. Anthony Newell is one of the few bright spots for BSU, as the forward is leading the team with 17.5 ppg and 8.4 rpg. Peyton Stovall is the only other player netting double figures, and comes into this matchup netting 13.3 ppg. The last time Ball State was on the floor the team only scored 59 points, but it was just enough to slip past Toledo by a seven-point margin. The Cardinals were led by Stovall who scored 15 points, while Melvin Goins added 14 points to go along with six steals in the win. As for Newell, he connected on just 5-of-17 attempts from the field, but still finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Chippewas have put their entire season on the shoulders of Giordan Watson, and although the guard has had a fantastic season, the team does not have enough power offensively to collect wins on a consistent basis. Watson is currently leading the team with 16.6 ppg, 104 assists and 47 steals. However, as a whole, Central Michigan is netting 70.5 ppg, while shooting a mediocre 43.4 percent from the floor. The offensive woes for CMU continued this past weekend, as the squad fell to Eastern Michigan, 67-64. The Chippewas shot just 34.4 percent from the floor and made only 6-of-23 attempts from behind the arc. Jeremy Allen scored 14 points in the loss, while Chris Kellermann contributed 12 points. As for Watson, he was just 3-of-14 from the field, and finished with only 11 points.
Both teams rely heavily on one player, as the Cardinals live and die by the play of Newell, while the Chippewas lean heavily on Watson. Since CMU is home, expect Watson to do just enough to get his team back in the win column.
