GAME NOTES: The College of Charleston Cougars and Elon Phoenix look to put their latest showings on the hardwood in the past when the two square off in a Southern Conference tilt at Alumni Gym tonight. Charleston has struggled offensively in two of the past three games. The Cougars were thwarted by Davidson by an 81-56 count two weekends ago, while Western Carolina upended the squad, 65-57 on their home floor this past Saturday. Sandwiched in between those two setbacks was a 79-73 victory over Chattanooga, as the Cougars take their mediocre 7-9 conference record to UNC Greensboro following tonight's bout. Elon was in the midst of a season-high three-game winning streak before Saturday, but ran into a buzzsaw at Georgia Southern. The Phoenix posted their lowest-scoring output of the season in the 59-44 drubbing, as the team squandered a chance to get back to even in conference play. On January 5th, the Cougars and Phoenix met up in Charleston with the Cougars coming away victorious in a 78-65 decision. Elon's only victory in seven meetings with Charleston occurred back in the 2005-06 campaign.
This past Saturday, Charleston had a nice day from behind the arc (6-of-15) and the free throw line (15-of-17), but turnovers and missed mid-range jumpers proved to be the difference. The team shot just 33.3 percent inside the perimeter, with Andrew Goudelock leading the way with 15 points. He is among the team leaders in scoring (13.3 ppg), while topping the team in three-point field goal percentage (.420). Tony White Jr., who finished with 12 points in the loss to Western Carolina, paces the squad in points (13.6 ppg) and assists (2.8 apg). Jermaine Johnson and Dustin Scott are chipping in 10.9 and 10.1 ppg, respectively, while combining to bring down 15.4 rebounds per outing.
Not much can be said for Elon in the 44-point showing at GSU, but the Phoenix had a few highlights. Montell Watson managed to hit 6-of-13 from the field for a team-high 14 points, and TJ Douglas hit three of the squad's four trifectas. Watson is now netting 9.9 ppg, while leading the team with 82 assists on the season. Brett James, who led the team in scoring in four of the previous six games, was held without a field goal in 27 minutes of play. It was an unlikely shabby game for the guard, who is averaging 12.0 points and 5.4 rebounds a game. The team's leading scorer and rebounder, Ola Atoyebi, has been coming off the bench recently, but is still effective in his supporting role in logging 12.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per outing.
Despite the anemic showing this past weekend, Elon has been playing its best ball of the season over the past two weeks. Meanwhile, Charleston has been unpredictable and has just one road win in the past month.
