GAME NOTES: The Rhode Island Rams try to rebound from their first home loss of the season tonight, as they host the Massachusetts Minutemen in an Atlantic 10 battle at the Ryan Center. After opening the season 11-0 at the Ryan Center, the Rams were finally dealt a loss, dropping an 81-77 decision to nationally- ranked Xavier on Monday. It was the second loss in a row and third in four games, all of which have come by four points or fewer. With the recent slump, URI now sits at just 6-5 in conference play, but a still healthy 20-6 overall. As for UMass, it enters the tilt on a winning note, capturing an 88-77 triumph over Saint Louis on Sunday. The win snapped a brief two-game slide and improved the squad to 16-9 overall and 5-6 in league play. The Minutemen now take to the road, where they have gone 4-6 thus far. UMass leads the all-time series with URI, 74-55, and that includes a 78-76 triumph in a meeting just two weeks ago.
The Minutemen have excelled at the offensive end of the court, averaging a hardy 82.2 ppg, but they have struggled at the other end, giving up 78.0 ppg. Gary Forbes is one the league's most productive players and he leads UMass in scoring (20.2 ppg), as well as rebounding (7.6 rpg). Rick Harris has provided a nice complement to him with 18.0 ppg and he is the team's top defender with 42 steals to his credit. Etienne Brower adds 12.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg to this attack, while Chris Lowe contributes 12.3 ppg and a team-best 5.6 apg. In the squad's last game, Dante Milligan stepped up for UMass, netting a career-best 21 points in an 88-77 win over Saint Louis. Forbes tallied 17 point and dished out five assists, while Brower had 15 points and nine rebounds. Harris netted 14 points off the bench and Lowe notched a double-double with 13 points and the same amount of assists. As a team, the Minutemen doled out 23 helpers, in addition to knocking down 11-of-23 attempts from long distance and 25-of-32 at the foul line.
The Rams are one of the few teams in the A-10 than can match the firepower of UMass, as they are scoring a similar 81.3 ppg behind 47.1 percent shooting from the floor and 39.2 percent from three-point range. Will Daniels heads the squad in scoring at 18.6 ppg and he is also pulling down a solid 6.8 rpg. Jimmy Baron hits on 43.0 percent of his long-range attempts for an average of 14.8 ppg, while Parfait Bitee turns in 11.6 ppg and a team-high 5.0 apg. In the club's prior outing, Bitee poured in 25 points and handed out seven assists, but it wasn't enough for URI in a narrow loss to Xavier. Daniels tallied 23 points for the Rams, who shot 44.4 percent from the floor, including a 10-of-21 effort from downtown. The team though, was unable to slow down Xavier, allowing it to drain 54.0 percent of its total shots.
URI is coming off a rare home loss, so expect the team to come out looking for redemption tonight. In what should be a high scoring affair, go with the Rams behind their efficient shooting.
