Davidson (20-6) at Winthrop (18-9)

GAME NOTES: The top team in the Southern Conference takes a break from league play this evening, as the Davidson Wildcats battle the Big South's Winthrop Eagles in a Bracketbuster game on national television. The Wildcats are sporting an impressive 20-6 record, with a flawless 18-0 record in-conference. Davidson hasn't lost since a 66-65 setback at NC State on December 21st and have won 16 straight games entering this matchup (second longest active streak in the nation), including a 75-66 victory over UNC Greensboro on Tuesday. The Eagles are a highly successful team as well, sporting an 18-9 overall record and a league-leading 9-3 mark in the Big South. The team also comes in with a win streak in tow, although the Eagles streak is a more modest four games. The team was last in action on Wednesday, posting an 80-70 victory at VMI. These two schools are just 45 miles apart, but this is only the eighth all-time meeting. Winthrop holds a slim 4-3 edge over Davidson. The Wildcats won the last meeting 59-52, but that was back in 1992.

The Wildcats are not your average small program, as Davidson has played well against the nation's big boys this season, including hanging tough with both North Carolina and Duke. It certainly helps to have one of the nation's premier scorers and that is exactly what sophomore guard Stephen Curry is. The 6-3 youngster has been named the SoCon Player of the Week for four straight weeks. He currently leads the conference and ranks fourth in the country in scoring at 25.8 ppg. Curry is also among the nation's elite in free-throw percentage (12th at .898) and three-pointers (third with 111 treys). Curry's offensive fireworks are aided by the play of point guard Jason Richards, who is averaging a steady 12.3 ppg, while pacing the entire country in assists (8.1 apg). In the win over UNC Greensboro, Curry hit six three-pointers, en route to a game-high 30 points. Andrew Lovedale added 14 points in support, as Davidson registered its fourth straight 20-win season.

The Eagles shot a sterling .547 from the floor, including .600 in the second half, as they were able to distance themselves from VMI for a solid road win. Michael Jenkins led five Eagles in double figures with 17 points. Chris Gaynor added 15 and recorded eight steals. With his thievery, Gaynor became the Big South's all-time steals leader (246). Antwon Harris added 12 points, while Taj McCullough and Byron Faison came off the bench to tally 13 and 11 points, respectively. The defensive effort was solid as well, as Winthrop held the nation's top scoring team 23 points below its season average. Jenkins is the team's top offensive threat, averaging 14.0 ppg. McCullough is next in line at 12.0 ppg, while Gaynor is closing in on double figures with 9.9 ppg. Gaynor is also boasting of a solid 2.4/1 assists to turnover ratio and is averaging 3.1 steals per game.

The Eagles are certainly not a pushover by any means, but with the way Curry is shooting the ball right now, it is hard to envision Davidson losing this game.
