GAME NOTES: Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski seeks out his 800th career win this afternoon in Raleigh, as his seventh-ranked Duke Blue Devils take on the NC State Wolfpack in ACC action at the RBC Center. The Blue Devils are tied with the North Carolina Tar Heels atop the ACC standings at 11-2. The team has won two straight games since a brief two-game slide and comes into this game following a 71-58 home win against Georgia Tech on Wednesday. The Wolfpack would like nothing better than to play spoiler in their home finale. They will close out their regular season next weekend at Wake Forest. Sidney Lowe's team is a mere 4-10 in-conference and comes into this contest with a horrific six- game losing streak. The Wolfpack were also in action on Wednesday, falling to Florida State by 10 points, 72-62. Duke holds a 133-96 advantage in the series with NC State and is looking for the regular season sweep, following a 92-72 victory in Durham back on January 31st.
The Blue Devils got balanced scoring against Georgia Tech, as DeMarcus Nelson and Gerald Henderson finished with 15 points each, followed by Kyle Singler and Greg Paulus, who added 13 and 11 points, respectively. The defensive pressure was a factor as well, with Duke holding Tech to a mere .377 shooting, while forcing a whopping 20 turnovers. One of the most dangerous offensive teams in the nation this season, Duke is averaging 85.0 ppg (third nationally), delivering on 47.2 percent of its shots. The scoring depth is apparent, with five players currently averaging double figures. Nelson leads the way with 15.3 ppg, but he is much more than just a scorer. The veteran guard is also pacing the team in steals (47), while averaging 6.0 rpg and 3.1 apg. Singler is one of the conference's top freshmen, adding 14.3 ppg, while pulling down 6.0 rpg. Henderson (12.4 ppg), Jon Scheyer (10.9 ppg) and Paulus (10.6 ppg) provide plenty of offensive support.
Trevor Ferguson and Tracy Smith came off the bench to tally 17 and 12 points, respectively, but got little help elsewhere, as NC State dropped a 10-point decision to Florida State this week. Courtney Fells was able to chip in 12 points, but leading scorer J.J. Hickson managed just nine. Like Singler for Duke, Hickson has performed at a top level, despite being just a freshman. The 6-10 youngster is shooting a remarkable .593 from the field this season and leads the Wolfpack in scoring (14.7 ppg), rebounding (8.5 rpg) and blocks (45). Senior forward Gavin Grant (13.6 ppg) helps out in the frontcourt, as does Brandon Costner (9.1 ppg). Fells (11.1 ppg) is the team's top perimeter threat, pacing NC State with 52 three-pointers, while shooting nearly 40 percent from long range (.397). The Wolfpack aren't an offensive juggernaut by any stretch of the imagination (67.2 ppg) and would probably be best served by slowing things down and playing a methodical half-court game.
Coach K gets his first shot at becoming just the sixth coach in NCAA history to amass 800 victories. Duke is starting to return to form, while NC State is just trying to close out the season. Look for the Blue Devils to get the victory for their legendary coach here.
