GAME NOTES: Two teams coming off narrow losses get right back at it today, as the 21st-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets tussle with the George Mason Patriots in the consolation round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
The Jackets were pitted against one of the better teams in this tourney on Thursday and they let a late lead slip away in a 63-59 setback to 18th-ranked Dayton. It was obviously a disappointing finish for Tech, which opened the season with a 100-59 blasting of Florida A&M.
As for the Patriots, they too let one slip away on Thursday, falling just short in an upset bid of fifth-ranked Villanova, 69-68. It was a valiant effort, but one that could have been a whole lot different. GM is now 2-1 after opening the campaign with victories at home against Liberty (76-72) and Dartmouth (60-44).
Today's game marks the first-ever meeting between Georgia Tech and George Mason on the hardwood.
Tech held a 57-50 lead with 4:37 remaining, but was outscored 13-2 the rest of the way in a loss to Dayton yesterday. The Jackets were plagued by turnovers, committing 26, and they also had issues from long range (2-of-8) as well as at the foul line (11-of-20). The team did shoot 51.1 percent from the floor to rally from a 31-22 halftime deficit, but it couldn't hang on down the stretch. Maurice Miller and Derrick Favors were the only players to reach double figures for the Jackets, posting 10 points apiece. Gani Lawal added nine points and eight boards, but he was guilty of a team-high eight turnovers.
The Patriots led nearly the entire game, but when it mattered most, they let down, as Villanova made a pair of three-pointers in the final minute to steal the victory. George Mason, which missed four free throws down the stretch, had a chance to win the game, but failed to get off a shot on its final possession. The Patriots slowed down the Villanova attack by forcing 17 turnovers and holding the Wildcats to just a 35.8 percent shooting effort from the floor. However, George Mason couldn't compete on the boards, as it was outrebounded 44-31, including 19-8 on the offensive glass. Ryan Pearson, who is averaging 15.0 ppg and 8.7 rpg on the season, guided the team in defeat with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Each club let a tight one slip away yesterday, but at least they get a chance to rebound right away. George Tech has the size advantage and should be able to take advantage of George Mason down low for the victory.
