Niagara (1-1) vs. Howard (0-2)

GAME NOTES: Second round action of the Glenn Wilkes Classic will begin this morning at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, as the Niagara Purple Eagles take on the Howard Bison.

The Purple Eagles stumbled in their season-opener, falling to Auburn, 69-65. However, the team was able to rebound with a solid, 76-69 victory over Drexel this past Tuesday. The Purple Eagles will remain on the road until early December when they host Manhattan.

As for the Bison, they have started their new season with back-to-back losses, falling to Indiana (80-63) and most recently UCF (68-59). Just like Niagara, the Bison will remain on the road for the next few games, and will not host their first contest until November 25th against Fairfield.

After scoring just 65 points in their season-opener, the Purple Eagles were able to score 79 points en route to a win over Drexel. However, despite winning the game and scoring a solid amount of points, the Purple Eagles only made 34.9 percent of their attempts from the field. Rob Garrison led the way in the win with 20 points, while Bilal Benn added a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds. It was the second straight double-double on the season for Benn, who opened the year with a 16-point, 13-rebound performance against Auburn. Not everything went right for the Purple Eagles against Drexel, as Anthony Nelson, the team's leading scorer against Auburn (17 points), finished with just seven points and three turnovers against the Dragons.

Scoring points has been a problem for the Bison in the early stages of this season, as the team scored just 60 points in a season-opening loss to Indiana, and followed that with a 59 point showing against Central Florida in its most recent matchup. Howard shot a pedestrian 41.5 percent from the floor in the contest, and made only 4-of-15 attempts from long range. Calvin Thompson, who led the team against Indiana with 13 points, was at it again against UCF, as the guard scored 15 points, to go along with eight rebounds and five assists. Kyle Riley added 11 points in the loss, while Paul Kirkpatrick and Adam Walker both chipped in with 10 points apiece. Curtis White, who scored 10 points in the opener, was limited against UCF, with just four points in the loss

The Purple Eagles clearly need to be more consistent with their shooting, but even if they run hot and cold on Friday, Niagara should have no trouble getting past Howard.
