GAME NOTES: The red-hot Iona Gaels bring a three-game homestand to a close tonight, as they host the Canisius Golden Griffins in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Hynes Center.
Courtesy of a seven-game winning streak, their longest since 2006, the Gaels have propelled themselves into sole possession of second place in the MAAC standings at 8-3. Iona most recently defeated Marist, 61-42, on Thursday to improve to 16-6 overall and 8-2 at home.
As for Canisius, it too enters the contest on a high note, notching a 73-70 overtime victory against Niagara on Friday. It was the second win in three games for the Golden Griffins, who are now a level 11-11 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
The Golden Griffins were the last team to defeat Iona, 77-65, back on January 4th and that victory tied the all-time series at 23-23 between the schools.
Canisius held Niagara to a dismal 34.7 percent shooting performance from the floor, including a poor 9-of-38 showing from downtown, as it picked up a 73-70 overtime win on Friday. Elton Frazier led the charge, as he recorded a double- double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Frank Turner posted 18 points and five assists, while Julius Coles logged 16 points. On the season, Turner has nearly done it all for the Griffins, leading the team with 17.2 ppg, 5.1 apg and 49 steals. Coles has formed a solid one-two punch with Turner and he checks in with 15.4 ppg and 5.0 rpg.
The Gaels forced 22 turnovers and scored 22 points off those mishaps on their way to a 61-42 win over Marist last week. Iona also had its way down low, controlling the boards, 40-33, and outscoring Marist in the paint, 40-14. Scott Machado led the way with 14 points and six assists, while Alejo Rodriguez registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. On the season, Machado is the lone player on the roster scoring in double figures, with 12.1 ppg, and he also leads Iona in assists (4.2 apg) and steals (40). The Gaels as a team, have thrived on defense, as they are forcing 16.8 tpg and holding opponents to just 39.9 percent shooting from the field.
Behind its stingy defense, expect Iona to continue its run and get some revenge with a victory over Canisius tonight.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
