GAME NOTES: Kent State will try to continue its winning ways when the Golden Flashes host the Northern Illinois Huskies this evening in a Mid-American Conference tussle at the M.A.C. Center.
The Huskies enter this game in desperate need of a victory, as the team has dropped its last three matchups. The last time Northern Illinois was on the floor the team fell to 4-3 in conference play with a 95-83 setback to Buffalo.
The Golden Flashes on the other hand have won four straight games and come into this matchup fresh off a 74-73 victory over Western Michigan. The recent win over the Broncos pushed KSU's league mark to 5-2 on the season and also brought the team's home ledger to 8-2.
The Golden Flashes own a 29-17 edge over Northern Illinois in the all-time series, and have won the last eight games against the Huskies, including a 64-61 decision in last year's MAC Tournament.
The Huskies have been terrible at the defensive end of the floor during their three-game skid and are coming off a poor display against Buffalo in which the team surrendered 95 points. The lackluster defensive effort against Buffalo overshadowed the team's play at the offensive end of the floor, as NIU finished with 83 points on a 46.8 percent shooting effort. Xavier Silas erupted for 27 points and eight rebounds in the loss, while Mike DiNunno added 15 points. Silas has been the main scoring threat for Northern Illinois, as the guard is averaging 21.1 ppg, to go along with 5.4 rpg. As a whole however, the Huskies have struggled at times, netting a meager 68.1 ppg.
Rodriquez Sherman dunked the ball and was fouled with two seconds remaining in regulation against the Broncos on Saturday. The dunk tied the game for KSU and the successful free throw by Sherman gave the Golden Flashes a thrilling, 74-73 win. Sherman finished with 12 points and six assists, while Chris Singletary paced the team with 24 points. On the season, Sherman is netting 11.0 ppg and is also posting 4.7 rpg, to go along with a team-best 73 assists. However, the top offensive option has been Justin Greene, who is averaging 13.2 ppg and a team-best 6.6 rpg. As a whole, the Golden Flashes are averaging 70.1 ppg.
The Golden Flashes have been outstanding of late and should continue to play well this evening in a matchup against a struggling Northern Illinois squad.
