Air Force (9-11) at San Diego State (15-6)

GAME NOTES: Having picked up their first Mountain West Conference win in almost 23 months, the Air Force Falcons try to make it two in a row tonight as they visit the San Diego State Aztecs at Viejas Arena.

Air Force, which went winless in conference play last season and opened 2009-10 with six straight setbacks versus MWC foes, finally snapped a 22-game slide in league action on Saturday with a 70-63 triumph over Wyoming at home. The win was just the second since the last days of December for the academy and now the goal for Air Force is to finally win a true road game this season, having gone 0-6 to this point.

As for the Aztecs, they picked up their third win in the last four outings on Saturday with a 64-52 victory over the Colorado State Rams in Fort Collins. With the decision SDSU is now 4-3 in conference and a game over .500 on the road at 6-5 as well.

The Aztecs lead the all-time series with Air Force by a count of 42-20, thanks in part to a 65-34 rout of the Falcons in the most recent meeting a season ago.

For their first conference win since March 5, 2008, the Falcons turned to Evan Washington to get them moving in the right direction on Saturday and he did so with a career-high 23 points in the victory against the Wyoming Cowboys at Clune Arena. Not only did Washington shoot 7-of-10 from the floor on the day, he also handed out seven assists, while teammates Michael Lyons and Grant Parker took charge on the front line with 16 and 12 points, respectively, and combined for nine rebounds. The return of Parker has been big for the Falcons, a fact proven by their overdue conference win against Wyoming over the weekend. Parker, who has appeared in just 10 games, leads the group with his 14.7 ppg and is shooting an even 50 percent from the floor, while collecting a team-best 6.3 rpg. Washington checks in with 11.8 ppg and another 5.0 rpg, not to mention a team-high 65 assists in an effort to get his teammates involved in the action. At the moment the academy is posting a meager 60.7 ppg on offense, but at least the Falcons are only giving up 62.8 ppg.

Even though the Aztecs shot only 18-of-33 at the free-throw line and turned the ball over 15 times on Saturday, the defense played well enough to hand Colorado State a 12-point defeat at Moby Arena. D.J. Gay led three players in double figures with his 17 points, even though he shot just 1-of-6 behind the three-point line, while Kawhi Leonard posted a double-double with his 14 points and 12 boards, followed by Chase Tapley with 12 points of his own. Malcolm Thomas, who finished with just five points, accounted for a game-high 13 boards. The last four games have seen a different leading scorer each time out for the Aztecs, which isn't necessarily a bad things seeing as how the squad will need input from all areas down the stretch in MWC action. Leonard leads a quartet of double-digit scorers with his 11.7 ppg and is also first on the glass with 9.6 rpg, while Thomas is close behind in both departments with 10.8 ppg and 8.1 rpg. With their efforts, SDSU has topped opponents on the glass by more than seven and a half rebounds per game to this point in the campaign.

Now that the Falcons have something to build on in conference play, it's a shame that it will have to come to an abrupt end in California tonight, because the Aztecs are not about to let Air Force keep them down in their own building.
