GAME NOTES: The Gamecocks will try to remain in the win column when Jacksonville State takes on the Tennessee State Tigers in an Ohio Valley Conference battle at the Gentry Center.
The Gamecocks pushed their league ledger to 6-5 on the season with a 70-55 victory over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. It was the second straight win for JSU, and the fourth in the team's last five matchups. However, playing on the road has been a problem this year, as the team is just 1-6 as the visitor.
As for the Tigers, they enter this contest stuck in a six-game slide, with the most recent setback coming against Eastern Kentucky, 75-58. The loss to the Colonels was the sixth setback at home for TSU, and also left the team with a pathetic 1-10 mark in conference play.
Earlier this season the Gamecocks pounded Tennessee State, 85-67, but despite the loss, the Tigers still hold an 8-7 edge over Jacksonville State in the all-time series.
The Gamecocks have not been overwhelming offensively, but the team has done enough to collect victories. Jacksonville State is netting 71.9 ppg on the year, and is being led by Trenton Marshall, who is averaging 18.6 ppg, to go along with 5.7 rpg. Nick Murphy is contributing 13.6 ppg and is also grabbing 6.6 rpg, while Jeremy Bynum is posting 10.6 ppg. In the team's recent win over Eastern Illinois, the Gamecocks shot 46.5 percent from the floor and also made 23-of-32 attempts from the foul line. Marshall exploded for 25 points in the win, while Murphy tallied 14 points. Bynum chipped in with 11 points, while Stephen Hall joined the trio with 10 points.
As for the Tigers, they have not enjoyed similar success offensively, as the team is netting just 65.5 ppg, behind a pedestrian 40.3 percent shooting effort. Josh Sain is netting 13.7 ppg, while Jacquan Nobles and Robert Covington are netting 10.7 and 10.0 ppg, respectively. Tennessee State's offensive woes continued in the team's recent setback to Eastern Kentucky, as the Tigers scored just 58 points in the matchup. Sain was on the floor for just one minute in contest and did not factor in the matchup. Without Sain's help Nobles led the way offensively, as the guard scored 20 points. Covington added 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
The Tigers might be home, but for this team that does not mean very much. Look for a tighter outcome compared to the meeting in Jacksonville, but the Gamecocks should ultimately reign supreme in this contest.
