GAME NOTES: Big East Conference foes will collide tonight in Milwaukee as the hometown Marquette Golden Eagles host the DePaul Blue Demons.
DePaul has lost three straight games and nine of its last 10 to fall to 8-13 overall and 1-8 in conference. The Blue Demons were competitive in Saturday's matchup with Syracuse, but that contest resulted in a 59-57 loss. DePaul has played six true road games this season, and all six have resulted in losses.
As for Marquette, it has recorded back-to-back wins to move to 13-8 overall, including 10-2 at home. Still, the club's 4-5 Big East mark needs improvement. On Saturday, the Golden Eagles showed a great deal of heart in a 70-68 road victory over UConn.
Marquette owns a 64-44 series advantage over DePaul, but the Blue Demons defeated the Golden Eagles, 51-50, last season.
Through 21 games, DePaul is generating just 59.5 ppg on 39.4 percent shooting from the floor, as a lack of offensive production has been key to the team's poor record. Will Walker is scoring 16.3 ppg for the Blue Demons, but he is shooting only 37.6 percent from the field. Mac Koshwal is netting 13.4 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer on the roster, and he is a 56.8 percent shooter from the field. Koshwal is pulling down 10.1 rpg as well, by far the best average on the club. In the heart-breaking loss to Syracuse, Walker scored 21 points on the strength of five three-pointers. Unfortunately, no other Blue Demon reached double figures, and the team's 40.7 percent efficiency from the field simply wasn't good enough.
Lazar Hayward is the leading scorer for Marquette with 18.1 ppg, and he is pulling down 7.5 rpg as well. Jimmy Butler is netting 15.0 ppg on 57.2 percent shooting from the floor, and he is grabbing 6.6 rpg. The third and final double-digit scorer on the roster is Darius Johnson-Odom with 12.5 ppg on the strength of his 50.5 percent three-point efficiency. The Golden Eagles are posting 75.3 ppg while holding opponents to 62.8 ppg. Butler scored 21 points on Saturday against UConn, and Hayward tallied 20 points. Johnson-Odom chipped in 15 points for Marquette, which shot only 38.1 percent from the field. Perhaps the most impressive stat of all for the Golden Eagles was that they turned the ball over only three times. Because they took such great care of the ball, they were able to overcome a 44-25 rebounding disadvantage.
Clearly, Marquette should win this game. The Golden Eagles will start fast and end strong.
