GAME NOTES: The Evansville Purple Aces try once again to record their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season, as they tangle with the Creighton Bluejays in Omaha tonight.
At the moment, the Aces are suffering through one of the longest losing streaks in college basketball at 11 in a row. The last victory for Evansville took place back on December 19th with an 84-63 decision over Tennessee-Martin, a program that has a total of just three wins on the season entering this week. The most recent outing for Evansville took place on Saturday when the team was handed a 63-56 setback by Indiana State at home.
As for the Bluejays, a once dominant team in this league, they are a mere 11-11 on the season and 6-5 in conference play at the moment. On Saturday, the squad had a two-game win streak snapped in a 79-74 loss to the Drake Bulldogs on the road.
The Jays lead the all-time series with Evansville by a count of 21-9, winning 10 straight at home in the series by an average of 18.5 ppg, although last year's encounter in this building yielded only an 89-84 victory.
Colt Ryan scored a team-best 14 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Purple Aces over the weekend at Roberts Stadium, but it did little to change the outcome and yet another loss for the squad in conference play. Denver Holmes tacked on 12 points for a team that shot just 38.0 percent from the field, 2-of-11 behind the three-point line and had almost as many turnovers (17) as made baskets (19). On a team that is scoring just 65.4 ppg this season, the Aces actually list as many as three double-digit scorers, with Ryan heading the list with his 14.8 ppg. However, Ryan's scoring has certainly come at a cost considering he has made just 38.8 percent of his field goal attempts thus far. James Haarsma (11.4 ppg) handles a good portion of the action in the paint with his 7.9 rpg, while Holmes contributes another 11.0 ppg as he tries to do his best out on the perimeter where he is 33.9 percent accurate these days.
Not only did Creighton shoot just 13-of-21 at the free-throw line over the weekend against the Bulldogs on the road, the Jays also had to sit back and watch as Drake made good on all but four of 26 chances at the stripe in the outing as well. Cavel Witter scored a team-best 17 points, converting 4-of-6 behind the three-point line, while Casey Harriman tacked on 14 points in the losing cause as well. After 22 games the Jays have just a single double- digit scorer listed on their stat sheet in Kenny Lawson, his 12.4 ppg coming on 53.3 percent shooting from the floor. However Lawson, who is also first on the team with 6.6 rpg, has but 18 assists thus far, which means teammates can forget about seeing the ball once it lands in his hands. The suspension of P'Allen Stinnett (9.2 ppg) continues to keep the Jays from reaching their full potential.
Evansville has won just one game on the road this season and, considering the Bluejays are winners of nine of their 10 home dates, the luck for the Purple Aces doesn't appear ready to change tonight.
