GAME NOTES: Just slightly behind the pace set by Xavier in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Charlotte 49ers continue their chase of the Musketeers tonight as they clash with the George Washington Colonials at Halton Arena.
The 49ers are riding a five-game win streak, having beaten UMass on the road on Saturday evening by a score of 72-58. That victory moved Charlotte to 6-1 in conference, the only loss being an 86-74 setback at Xavier in the middle of January.
As for the Colonials, they started off the 2009-10 campaign well enough with six wins in seven games, but the tide has turned in the last few weeks with the team losing five of the last six and needing overtime last week to top Saint Louis at home. On Saturday, the Colonials made the trip to Rhode Island and were turned away in a 72-66 final, dropping GW to just 2-5 in conference play.
In terms of the all-time series, the Colonials hold a slim 10-9 lead over Charlotte, even though the 49ers have taken six of the 10 meetings played at Halton Arena over the years.
Tony Taylor scored a career-high 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field over the weekend, but even that was not enough to keep the Colonials out of the loss column versus URI. Lasan Kromah and Dwayne Smith chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively, but even though the team shot 48.3 percent from the floor, suffering 20 turnovers was no way to put together a winning effort away from home. Taylor, the leading scorer in each of the last three games for the Colonials, is slowly building momentum when it counts the most and is now putting up 9.9 ppg, in addition to handing out three and a half assists per game. Damian Hollis remains the top scorer with his 13.7 ppg and Kromah adds 10.9 ppg, but the former is rather inept out on the perimeter (.259) and the latter has his issues at the free-throw line (.500).
Derrio Green was on fire for the 49ers over the weekend as he converted half of his 16 three-point attempts and finished with a game-high 34 points in the victory versus UMass on the road. Green, who finished the evening 9-of-19 from the floor, converted all eight of his free-throw attempts as well. Phil Jones was the only other player in double figures for Charlotte as he dropped in 12 points off the bench. Green, who posted 26 points in the win over nationally- ranked Temple last week, was named the A-10 Player of the Week for his efforts, adding seven assists and five rebounds in those two contests as well. Green is now second on the team in scoring with his 13.8 ppg, even though he is still shooting below 40 percent from the field. Shamari Spears is at the top of the scoring list with 16.0 ppg, helping to loft the program to 74.9 ppg over the course of 21 contests thus far.
With Green picking up the slack at just the right time for the 49ers, expect to see him and his teammates land in the win column yet again tonight.
