GAME NOTES: The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will try to remain perfect at home when they host the Marshall Thundering Herd in a Conference-USA battle at the Reynolds Center.
The Herd are in desperate need of a victory after dropping their last four contests. The last time the team was on the floor Marshall was defeated by Houston, 81-66. The setback to the Cougars dropped the Herd to just 4-3 in league play and also 4-3 on the road.
As for the Golden Hurricane, they are coming off a 55-50 victory over UCF. It was the eighth win in the last nine games for Tulsa, which is 6-1 in league play. Tulsa has won all 13 of its home games this season and has won 21 straight matchups at the Reynolds Center.
The Golden Hurricane have won the last three matchups in the all-time series, and now own a 5-2 edge over Marshall.
The Herd have been one of the more dangerous teams offensively, as Marshall heads into this matchup averaging 78.9 ppg behind a 47.6 percent shooting effort. The frontcourt duo of Hassan Whiteside and Tyler Wilkerson have dominated for Marshall. Whiteside is currently leading the team with 13.0 ppg, 9.3 rpg and 113 blocks, while Wilkerson is netting 12.4 ppg, to go along with 6.7 rpg. Shaquille Johnson is contributing 11.2 ppg for Marshall out of the guard position. Surprisingly the last time the Herd were on the floor the team had a poor showing, netting just 66 points in a loss to Houston. Marshall shot just 37.9 percent from the field and also committed 22 turnovers in the loss. Chris Lutz led the way with 13 points, while Damier Pitts tallied 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Whiteside was also impressive, netting 10 points, to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks.
The Golden Hurricane have also been solid offensively, and come into this game averaging 74.2 ppg, behind a 47.2 percent shooting effort. Ben Uzoh is currently pacing the team with 16.3 ppg and 4.1 apg, while Jerome Jordan is netting 14.4 ppg, to go along with 8.1 rpg. Justin Hurtt, who is shooting 42.6 percent from behind the arc, is contributing 14.2 ppg. The last time the Golden Hurricane were on the floor the team only scored 55 points, but still managed to grab a five-point win over UCF. Tulsa shot 50.0 percent from the field in the matchup and also made 11-of-13 attempts from the foul line. Hurtt tallied 16 points in the matchup, while Uzoh added 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
This has all the makings of an exciting matchup between two strong teams. However, the Golden Hurricane are tough defensively and have been outstanding at home. Look for both trends to continue this evening.
