GAME NOTES: The seventh-ranked Georgetown Hoyas are tough to beat in Washington, D.C., and they are slated to host the South Florida Bulls in Big East Conference action this evening.
USF is clearly playing its best ball of the season right now, as three straight wins have enabled the team to improve a dreadful league record to 4-5. The Bulls are 14-7 overall, and after back-to-back overtime victories over Providence and Seton Hall, they got the best of Pittsburgh on Sunday by a 70-61 final.
As for Georgetown, it has won three of its last four games to move to 16-4 overall and 6-3 against Big East competition. On Saturday, the Hoyas handled Duke rather easily by an 89-77 final, and they are now 10-1 at home. Of the four losses suffered by Georgetown this season, three have come by five or fewer points.
The Hoyas own a 5-2 series edge over the Bulls, which includes a 65-40 romp over USF last season.
Dominique Jones has always been a good player for USF, but it is now fair to say that he has earned the title of "great". Jones has scored no fewer than 20 points in seven consecutive outings, and he made national headlines with a 46- point effort against Providence last week. On Sunday, he exploded for 37 points against Pittsburgh, accounting for more than half of his team's offensive output. He shot 10-of-20 from the field and 14-of-17 from the foul line. Chris Howard added 13 points for the Bulls, who only turned the ball over five times and earned a 24-12 edge in points from the foul line. Overall this season, Jones is now averaging 22.1 ppg on 49.7 percent shooting from the floor, and he tops the roster with 89 assists and 39 steals. Augustus Gilchrest provides 18.8 ppg and 7.4 rpg, and Jarrid Famous brings 11.5 ppg and 7.9 rpg to the mix. The Bulls are generating 69.9 ppg while allowing 65.9 ppg to opponents.
Georgetown is shooting 50.4 percent from the field through 20 games, including 40 percent from three-point range. As a result, the club is generating 72.9 ppg, and it is limiting opponents to 62.8 ppg on 40 percent shooting from the floor. Austin Freeman paces the Hoyas with 16.2 ppg, and he is a 53.4 percent shooter from the field. Greg Monroe, the team's center, checks in with 15.1 ppg and 9.8 rpg, while Chris Wright provides 15.0 ppg. Rounding out a foursome of double-digit scorers is Julian Vaughn with 10.7 ppg for a team that has featured the same starting lineup in every outing to date. The fact that Georgetown was able to connect on 71.7 percent of its field goal attempts against Duke on Saturday is downright staggering. The Hoyas played tremendous defense as well, limiting the Blue Devils to 37.1 percent efficiency. Wright and Monroe tallied 21 points apiece, while Freeman scored 20 points.
Sure, Jones has been absolutely unstoppable lately, but his team will fall to Georgetown on the road tonight. Solid play at both ends of the floor will be key once again for the Hoyas.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
