U-N-L-V (17-4) at Wyoming (9-12)

GAME NOTES: The UNLV Runnin' Rebels try to stretch their current win streak to four in a row tonight as they take on the Wyoming Cowboys in Mountain West Conference action at Arena Auditorium in Laramie.

The Rebels have won five of their last six outings and are now 5-2 in conference, thanks to a 60-50 win over Air Force a week ago at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

As for the Cowboys, they challenged the Air Force Falcons in their most recent outing, but in their case they suffered a 70-63 setback, marking the first time in 23 months that Air Force had beaten a league foe. The loss was the fourth in five games for the Pokes, who are now just 2-5 in the MWC this season.

Wyoming trails in the all-time series with the Rebels by a count of 24-14, but the Cowboys are the ones who posted a 77-68 win in this building a year ago.

UNLV went from shooting 0-of-6 behind the three-point line in the first half against Air Force, leading to a three-point deficit at the break, to 7-of-17 in the second half to capture the win last week. However, all the news was not positive for the Rebels as starting guard Derrick Jasper went down with a sprained left MCL late in the opening frame and is now scheduled to miss the next five weeks because of it. While Jasper wasn't exactly a star on offense with his 6.7 ppg, his 4.9 rpg and 60 assists made him someone that opponents had to keep an eye on so that he wouldn't break out with a big effort in any one area. The Rebels are still led on offense by Tre'Von Willis with his 17.4 ppg, followed by Chace Stanback with 10.4 ppg and a team-best 5.4 rpg, but both players tend to think that they are better three-point shooters than they actually are and because of that the entire team is now down to only 31.1 percent beyond the arc.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they were the ones who finally gave up a long- overdue conference win to the Falcons of Air Force on Saturday, bowing by seven points at Clune Arena. Nevertheless, the visitors didn't go down without a fight, as Desmar Jackson led four players in double figures with his 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor, while fellow reserve Amath M'Baye chipped in 11 points. Djibril Thiam and JayDee Luster accounted for 10 points apiece as they represented the starting five. Like the Rebels, Wyoming also has a starter on the shelf due to injury, the difference being that the Cowboys have lost leading scorer Afam Muojeke (16.8 ppg) for the rest of the year with a knee injury. With him out of action the Pokes now turn to Thiam for more scoring and guidance, even though he is putting up just 10.1 ppg and a mere 8.7 ppg in league action. Jackson, who has led the group in scoring the last two games, needs to remain inside the three-point line in order to be effective, seeing as how he has made just 2-of-17 chances on the perimeter this season.

The loss of Muojeke is huge for the Cowboys and will be a bigger hit to Wyoming than the loss of Jasper to the Rebels, giving the visitors an advantage tonight.
