GAME NOTES: The Rams of Virginia Commonwealth shoot for their third straight win tonight as they venture down to North Carolina to challenge fellow Colonial Athletic Association member UNC Wilmington at Trask Coliseum.

VCU, which has won six of the last seven outings and is now 7-4 in conference action, toppled Georgia State on Saturday at home by a score of 78-62.

As for the Seahawks, who are now under the direction of interim head coach Brooks Lee after Benny Moss was reassigned within the athletic department last week, they lost yet again in their most recent game on Saturday night, a 58-53 setback versus Towson at home. The defeat was the second in a row and the seventh in the last eight outings for a program that is just 3-8 against the rest of the CAA.

The first meeting of the season between the two schools took place last month, with the Rams crushing UNCW at home by a score of 91-57. The Seahawks were held to just 17 points in the first half and shot a miserable 28.4 percent from the field. With the previous decision, VCU now owns a 20-17 edge over UNCW in the all-time series.

Larry Sanders was one of five players to score in double figures over the weekend for the Rams, hitting for 13 points while also clearing 13 rebounds and posting three blocked shots in the win against Georgia State. Joey Rodriguez scored a season-high 22 points and handed out nine assists for the squad, followed by Brandon Rozzell with 12 points and Darius Theus and Ed Nixon with 10 points apiece. Sanders, one of the more dominating players in the paint in the CAA this season, is leading the team in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 15.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest at the moment. Rodriguez, who has handed out a hefty 125 assists already to rank among the league's best in that department, accounts for another 11.3 ppg, even though he is shooting just 25.9 percent behind the three-point line. As a unit, VCU has been scoring 77.4 ppg this season and limiting opponents to just 66.8 ppg entering the week.

The Seahawks actually led by a point at the break against Towson over the weekend, but then the UNCW offense hit the skids and logged a mere seven baskets in the second half of the five-point loss. Most disturbing was the team's insistence on taking 19 three-point shots in the second half alone, making just one of those and finishing the game 5-of-34 on the perimeter. John Fields scored 13 points and ripped down a staggering 21 rebounds, tied for the sixth-highest single game total this season. Chad Tomko and Ahmad Grant tacked on 11 points apiece as well in the loss. Tomko still leads the team in scoring with his 13.4 ppg, although he is shooting only 39.2 percent from the floor. Fields puts up 11.7 ppg on the strength of his 54.2 ppg and is also first on the team with 9.7 rpg and 56 blocked shots, yet his mere 13 assists and 51.0 percent accuracy at the free-throw line remains a concern for a team that is shooting a collective 64.7 percent at the stripe right now.

This is a battle between two teams moving in vastly different directions. The change at coach should have provided a spark in the last game for the Seahawks, but if it didn't happen then it likely won't happen tonight.
