GAME NOTES: Old Dominion will try to remain perfect at home when the Monarchs host the William & Mary Tribe this evening in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Tribe snapped a three-game skid the last time they were on the floor, defeating Drexel, 54-51. It was the seventh league win for William & Mary, which also has seven victories playing as the visitor.
The Monarchs are coming off a tough, 74-64 setback to Northeastern. The loss dropped Old Dominion to 9-2 in CAA play and snapped the team's seven-game winning streak. However, the team will look to bounce back at home where the Monarchs are a perfect 11-0.
The Monarchs have dominated the all-time series against William & Mary, winning 61 of the 76 meetings, including a 58-55 decision earlier this season.
Very rarely does a team shoot 26.1 percent from the field and win a basketball game, but that was the case for William & Mary, which defeated Drexel by three points despite its woeful performance. The Tribe made just 2-of-15 attempts from behind the arc, and finished 28-of-37 from the foul line. David Schneider led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Quinn McDowell tallied 12 points. Schneider and McDowell have been the top two players for William & Mary throughout the season, as Schneider is pacing the team with 16.3 ppg and 6.2 rpg, while McDowell is posting 15.0 ppg. Overall the team is netting 71.2 ppg, behind a 43.8 percent shooting effort.
The Monarchs can attribute their success this season to their play defensively, as Old Dominion is limiting the opposition to just 55.6 ppg, and a 39.5 percent shooting effort. However, the last time the Monarchs were in action the team struggled to control Northeastern, as the Huskies scored 74 points en route to a win over ODU. In the loss, the Monarchs only shot 41.1 percent from the floor and made just 3-of-11 attempts from behind the arc. Gerald Lee led the way in the loss with 16 points, while Keyon Carter and Frank Hassell tallied 13 points and seven rebounds apiece. Lee is the only player averaging double figures on the season for Old Dominion, as the forward is posting 14.3 ppg, to go along with 5.2 rpg.
Look for the Monarchs to bounce back this evening against William & Mary. Old Dominion should put forth a stingy defensive performance, en route to its 10th league win.
