GAME NOTES: The Xavier Musketeers invade Amherst tonight for an Atlantic 10 Conference tussle with the Massachusetts Minutemen.
Through 21 games, Xavier has recorded a 15-6 overall record and a 7-1 mark in A-10 play. The Musketeers moved to 12-0 at home with a 108-60 beating of Fordham on Sunday, and that victory was the third in a row for the club. Tonight, Xavier will attempt to improve its 2-4 mark in true road affairs.
As for UMass, it has lost six of its last seven games to fall to 8-13 overall and 2-5 in conference. The Minutemen struggled at the offensive end in Saturday's 72-58 loss to Charlotte, and that setback dropped them to 6-4 at home.
Xavier owns a 12-8 series advantage over UMass, and the Musketeers have won the last four meetings.
Jordan Crawford is scoring 19.2 ppg this season to pace Xavier, which is generating 79.8 ppg. Defensively, the club is holding opponents to 67.7 ppg on 40.3 percent shooting from the field. Jason Love brings 11.0 ppg and 8.7 rpg to the floor for the Musketeers, and he has blocked 40 shots as well. Terrell Holloway is the third and final double-digit scorer on the roster, as he is posting 10.9 ppg to go along with 87 assists. Crawford poured in 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and 9-of-9 from the foul line in the romp over Fordham last time out. Jamel McLean added 16 points for the Musketeers, who shot 58.2 percent from the field and racked up 26 assists with only nine turnovers. A 41-28 rebounding advantage clearly helped the cause.
Ricky Harris has been the leading scorer for UMass in four consecutive outings and has topped the 20-point mark in three of those games. Harris is scoring 17.9 ppg to top the squad, and Anthony Gurley provides 14.7 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer on the roster. The Minutemen are posting 70.6 ppg on 40 percent shooting from the floor, and they are allowing 74.0 ppg on 44 percent field goal efficiency. On Saturday, UMass shot only 34.4 percent from the field against Charlotte, including 4-of-28 from three-point range, and 17 turnovers clearly hurt the cause. A 21-6 disadvantage in points from the foul line proved crippling. Harris tallied 25 points in the clash, but no other starter had more than six points.
While Harris may put up big offensive numbers again, his team is likely headed for another home loss. Xavier is simply a better team than UMass.
