GAME NOTES: The Arizona Wildcats are riding a season-high four-game win streak and carry plenty of momentum into tonight's Pac-10 Conference battle with the Washington Huskies.
There is a wealth of parity in the Pac-10 this year. As a result, Arizona's 6-3 record in good enough for a share of the league lead. The Wildcats, who are 12-9 overall, carry a 3-4 record in true road games into this evening's affair. On Sunday, they knocked off California at home by a 76-72 final.
As for Washington, it has won its last two games to move to 14-7 overall and 4-5 in conference. The Huskies dominated rival Washington State on Saturday by a 92-64 final, and while they have lost every true road game they have played this season, their 14-1 home mark is tremendously impressive.
Arizona holds a 43-24 series advantage over Washington, and the Wildcats won the most recent meeting last month in an 84-70 final.
There are four double-digit scorers on the roster for Arizona, and Nic Wise, who is the only player that has started all 21 games for the team, checks in with 16.0 ppg. Wise leads the team with 79 assists as well, and he is tops with 40 steals. Derrick Williams provides 15.9 ppg on 57.4 percent shooting from the field, and he is pulling down 7.3 rpg as well. Kyle Fogg brings 11.0 ppg to the mix, and Jamelle Horne rounds out a foursome of double-digit scorers with 10.8 ppg on 44.2 percent shooting from three-point range. Arizona is generating 72.6 ppg while limiting opponents to 70.7 ppg. On Sunday, the Wildcats played tremendous defense, limiting Cal to 37.7 percent shooting from the field. Nic Wise poured in 30 points on the strength of his 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range, and Williams tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Washington relies heavily on the duo of Quincy Pondexter and Isaiah Thomas to be productive at the offensive end every time out. Pondexter is scoring 20.3 ppg on 55.3 percent shooting from the floor, and he is ripping down 8.1 rpg. Thomas checks in with 17.7 ppg, and no other player on the roster is posting more than 8.7 ppg. The Huskies are generating 81.4 ppg through 21 games, and they are allowing 71.6 ppg. Washington limited Washington State to 32.3 percent shooting from the field on Saturday, one of the team's best defensive efforts to date. A 52-38 rebounding advantage also helped the cause, as did 19 assists against only nine turnovers. Pondexter poured in 29 points, while Thomas pitched in 19 points.
Expect this contest to be close from start to finish. Based solely on the homecourt advantage, give the edge to the Huskies.
