GAME NOTES: The Austin Peay Governors will be trying to extend a winning streak this evening, when they face off against the host Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup.
The Governors surprised Morehead State with a 56-55 homecourt win on Saturday. Austin Peay has won three straight and four of its last five, to stand at 13-10 overall and 7-4 in the OVC. The Governors are just 3-6 on the road, however.
The Skyhawks dropped a 77-45 decision at league-leading Murray State on Saturday to remain winless in OVC play this season. Tennessee-Martin now stands at 3-17 overall and is winless in 10 conference games. All three of the Skyhawks' wins have come on their home court, where they're 3-6.
Austin Peay prevailed at home 90-72 on January 7th to take a 50-18 lead in the all-time series.
Justin Blake hit a three-pointer with :14 left in regulation to give the Governors the win over Morehead State on Saturday. Wes Channels scored 17 points and Blake added 14 for the Governors, while Anthony Campbell grabbed nine rebounds. Austin Peay trailed 39-23 with 15:55 left in regulation before storming back for the win. Channels is the leading scorer on the ballclub at 16.4 ppg, which puts him third in the OVC scoring race. He's shooting 41.1 percent from the floor and 43.5 percent from long range. Campbell is fifth in the league in scoring at 15.5 ppg, shooting 47.9 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent from the foul line. John Fraley leads the team and is second in the conference in rebounding at 7.0 boards per contest, to go with 9.0 ppg. Caleb Brown tops the ballclub in assists at 3.5 apg. and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.1-to-1. Collectively, the Governors are hitting 45.6 percent from the floor. They're averaging 72.5 ppg, while allowing 72.3 points per contest.
Marquis Weddle's nine points was the best the Skyhawks could do against Murray State on Saturday. Terrance Coleman was the top man on the boards, with 11 rebounds. The Skyhawks trailed 46-23 at halftime and shot just 24.6 percent from the floor for the game, including just 1-of-11 from long range. Weddle leads the Skyhawks in scoring at 15.6 ppg, which puts him fourth in the league in scoring. He's shooting just 36.0 percent from the floor, but is hitting a sparkling 88.5 percent from the foul line. Benzor Simmons is averaging 14.3 ppg, and is leading the club in rebounding at 5.9 rpg, good for sixth in the conference. Reuben Clayton is at 13.6 ppg, while Delrico Lane is also in double figures at 10.6 ppg. Cataurius Taylor is tops in assists at 2.3 apg. This team isn't getting much production off its bench.The Skyhawks are shooting just 36.7 percent from the floor and only 28.9 percent from long range. Tennesee-Martin is scoring just 63.9 ppg, while allowing 76.9 points per contest. The Skyhawks have been held under 50 points twice in conference play and under 60 points four times.
Solid guard play will make Austin Peay a dangerous opponent in the conference tournament and will provide the framework for a victory tonight.
