GAME NOTES: A couple of Big West Conference teams with identical records hit the floor at the Pavilion tonight, as the UC Davis Aggies entertain the Cal Poly Mustangs.
Cal Poly is trying to avoid its first three-game slide since opening the 2009-10 campaign with five straight losses. On Saturday, the team was defeated by Cal State Bakersfield by a score of 57-53, dropping it to 8-12 on the season.
As for the Aggies, they too are trying to bounce back from a defeat in their most recent outing, an 80-58 setback to Long Beach State on the road this past Saturday. Losers of two of their last three, the Aggies are now 4-4 in conference.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Cal Poly is ahead by a count of 28-12, thanks in part to a 72-69 win at home in the first meeting of the season last month.
Cal Poly shot a miserable 23.7 percent from the field in the first half against Bakersfield on Saturday night and was never able to recover, converting just 30.6 percent for the entire game in the four-point loss. David Hanson came off the bench to deposit 17 points and rip down a game-high 15 rebounds for the Mustangs, while Will Taylor added a double-double of his own with 12 points and 12 boards as well. The outburst by Hanson was somewhat unexpected given that he is averaging just 9.1 ppg and 4.4 rpg in 20 appearances this season. The same could be said for Taylor as well, seeing as how he is averaging just 5.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg at the moment. The question is, what happened to Lorenzo Keeler and Shawn Lewis who are two of the top scorers for Cal Poly with 14.8 ppg and 10.1 ppg, respectively.
Like Cal Poly, the Aggies also had their issues shooting the ball over the weekend in their matchup with Long Beach State, hitting a mere 37.7 percent from the floor and 3-of-20 behind the three-point line. Dominic Calegari finished with 16 points, matching the output by Mark Payne, but the former made a mere 1-of-7 beyond the arc in the effort. Over the course of eight conference games this season Calegari is scoring a team-best 18.0 ppg, shooting a remarkable 62.2 percent from the floor and 46.4 percent behind the three-point line, even after Saturday's exhibition. Payne and Joe Harden account for 14.6 and 13.0 ppg, respectively, in conference play with Payne not only converting his free throws at an, 88.2 percent clip, but also having issued 17 assists and suffering only six turnovers along the way, and yet the team is still being outscored in league action by more than four points per game.
Both of these teams need to bounce back after horrible shooting efforts over the weekend and while Calegari and Payne have the ability to carry the Aggies, assume that Keeler will show up for Cal Poly tonight and bring the visitors the victory.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
